Album Info:Most, if not all, of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the spring of 2020, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

Title:  WGR 5017
Description:  WGR 5017 was part of the consist of a CN local traversing the east leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 15 May '20. The white building beyond the train is, or was, Progressive Paper Storage, Inc. (formerly Kimberly-Clark Warehouse (K-C Warehouse)), 135 Millview Dr. It does not receive rail service, but it looks like there may have been a spur on the northwest side of the building in the past. Looking south from Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye.

The Edward Smith Octagon House, 347 Smith St., is partially visible under the overpass. The house was erected between 1851 and 1854. Edward Smith, who operated a flour mill and had an early interest in the Neenah Paper Co., purchased the home in 1855. It has been owned by the Neenah Historical Society since 1993. Looking south from Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye.

IC 9568
Title:  IC 9568
Description:  A CN local momentarily fouls Appleton St. while working in the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI, on 18 May '20. The facility at left is currently home to Alliance Industries, 313 Appleton St., they apply powder coatings and manufacture sand cores. Founded at Waupaca, WI in 1979, they leased the neighboring facility at 320 Appleton St. in 2005. They later purchased that facility as well as this one. I haven't found any relevant information about this structure, other than that it was built in 1960. The former MILW yard was located on the other (south) side of it. St. Mary's Church, with its ornate steeple, is partially visible to the right of the locomotive. The current church was built in 1883, but the congregation was organized in 1867. The gray building to the right, home of Drucks Plumbing and Heating Company, Inc., 314 Appleton St., was built upon the former MILW yard. The brown building beyond that, home of Menasha Employees Credit Union, 310 Appleton St., was as well.

Something old, something new...
Title:  Something old, something new...
Description:  A shiny, new signal relay case prepares to take over from its awesome, old predecessor along the CN, former SOO, rails at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 18 May. '20. The new one was installed at some point after my last visit here, on 9 May. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. The track crossing over from the SOO rails to the C&NW rails is visible to the left. The telephone pole in the background, between the two relay cases, stands next to an abandoned portion of the C&NW right-of-way.

IC 9601
Title:  IC 9601
Description:  A CN local services the Ahlstrom-Munksjö NA Specialty Solutions, LLC, Thilmany Mill via former C&NW rails at Kaukauna, WI, on 18 May '20. The mill's Rail King is positioning a cut of loaded pulpwood cars for the local to pick up. The paper mill was founded as the American Pulp & Paper Co. in 1883. It became Thilmany Pulp & Paper Co. in 1889, after Oscar Thilmany bought out his partners. It became Expera Specialty Solutions on 26 Jun. 2013, after KPS Capital Partners, LP, acquired it and Wausau Specialty Papers. It was acquired by Finland’s Ahlstrom-Munksjö on 10 Oct. ’18. Looking northeast from what was, until recently, Thilmany Rd. It appears that the remnants of Stribley Rd. and Thilmany Rd. will now just be referred to as the latter (at least there are not any street signs to indicate otherwise). Portions of both roads were altered or removed during the destruction of the majority of the original Thilmany complex and simultaneous restoration of the oldest part of that facility (the Eagle Paper & Flouring Mill) in 2013 (behind me to the left).

IC 9601
Title:  IC 9601
Description:  A CN local approaches the former C&NW depot at Kaukauna, WI, on 18 May '20. The depot was built in 1947 at the intersection of Depot St. and Draper St., to replace the old, wooden depot. Designed in the Art Moderne style, it originally had flat roofs. The current gabled roofs were added at some point after 1983. The old depot became known as the north side depot after 1890, when the MLS&W, later C&NW, built their large, ornate depot south of the Fox River. That depot disappeared many years ago.

Description:  A CN through freight traverses the west leg of the wye as it prepares to set out and pick up cars at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 23 May '20. The train is passing the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. There are rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties stacked upon it. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. On the far side of the train lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye. In the background, a large quantity of fill is being added to the eastern half of the park, in preparation of future improvements. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) dominated the eastern half of the landfill/park from its opening in Jan. '98 until demolition was completed in the spring of '16. The Main St. overpass is to the right.

CNA 405098, et al.
Title:  CNA 405098, et al.
Description:  Looking northeast over the south end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI, on 23 May '20. One reason for this photograph is the Caterpillar and John Deere tracked vehicles which have been loaded onto flatcars, or are waiting to be loaded, for Michels Materials. The tracks at the far right are remnants of the former C&NW main line and yard. This particular remnant of the main line has been reduced to a spur. The CN depot/yard office is the gray building to the left. The tan 4- or 5-story facility behind and to the right of that is 5K Fibres, 1111 Henry St., based in Greenville, WI. They purchased the former Kimberly-Clark Corp. (K-C) Neenah Nonwovens Facility ca. Apr. '20. The silver silos beyond and to the right of that belong to Galloway Co., Inc., an active rail customer at the end of this portion of the former C&NW main line. The facility was started in 1927 at 601 S. Commercial St. as Neenah Milk Products, Galloway took it over in 1955. The facility has been expanded over the old right-of-way since the rails were pulled up. The clock tower of the once impressive 1888 city hall building, intersection of S. Commercial St. and W. Doty St., is partially visible on the horizon above the depot/yard office. To either side of that, some of downtown Neenah's bland, unimaginative, modern buildings, posing as architecture, can be seen. I am not a fan of modern architecture, obviously.

Description:  A CN container train crosses the mouth of the Fox River via the 2013 CN bascule bridge at Oshkosh, WI, on 24 May '20. This bridge was completed in Aug. '13 to replace the former C&NW 1899 swing bridge. In the background to the left can be a sign, donated by CN, which details some of the history of the old swing bridge. Train had two locomotives, CN 3199 pulling and CN 3262 pushing. Consist included CNIS 412040. In 2019 a few otherwise ordinary boxcars were converted to Autonomous Track Inspection Program (ATIP) cars. The CN web page which discusses the ATIP includes an aerial photograph of a train with one of these cars crossing this bridge.

Description:  A CN container train passes the W. Bell St. overpass as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI, on 25 May '20. Train had two locomotives, CN 2850 pulling and CN 3180 mid-train. Neenah's Southpark Industrial Center (industrial park is too plebeian for oft ostentatious Neenah) is partially visible in the background to the left. A remnant of the C&NW main line runs parallel on the other side of the tree line to the left of the train. The yellow silo in the background belongs to American Colloid Co., 901 Acco Ave., an active rail customer.

Former MILW Kiel, WI, Depot Site
Title:  Former MILW Kiel, WI, Depot Site
Description:  Looking southeast along the CN, formerly MILW, rails from Fremont St. at Kiel, WI, on 30 May '20. The platform for the depot stands to the left. When the depot was closed in 1970, the MILW offered to sell the building for $2,000 and rent the land under it for $160 per year. A local resident expressed the desire to purchase it, fix it up, and wait for someone interested in using it. I haven't learned how that turned out or what ultimately happened to the depot. There was a station sign here up until a couple of years ago, the post still stands in the background to the left of the platform. The historic J. B. Laun Lumber Co. stands at the far left. Jacob B. Laun purchased an existing lumber yard from Fredrick Griebenow and William Reseburg in 1884. The awesome cream colored brick building, designed by Walter F. Neumann, was built in 1924 (according to wisconsinhistory.org.). I haven't learned when the lumber yard closed, but it operated until at least 1998. I believe that the interesting buildings in the background to the right are part of the facility of Kiel Machine Works, LLC, 711 Washington St. The red flag denotes the current limit for the CN, but the rails beyond are still intact. The WSOR operates the line south of the Sheboygan River.

CN, former MILW, Rails at Kiel, WI
Title:  CN, former MILW, Rails at Kiel, WI
Description:  Looking northwest along the CN, former MILW, rails from Fremont St. at Kiel, WI, on 30 May '20. To the left are remnants of a spur which once served several rail served businesses. Land O'Lakes Industrial Cheese, 1125 8th St., can be seen in the background to the right. They used to receive rail service, but I don't think they have for a while. Maybe the recent expansion will mean renewal of rail service. According to https://www.landolakesinc.com/ on 20 Nov. '19: "At Kiel, we’ve undertaken a multi-year modernization project to allow us to make room to receive more member milk and deliver larger blocks of cheese. These infrastructure improvements include modernizing cheese making and packaging, expanding capacity and making whey processing improvements. When completed in mid-2019, Kiel will be able to handle 3.2 million pounds of milk per day and produce both 40-pound and 640-pound blocks of cheese."

CN 5419
Title:  CN 5419
Description:  A CN through freight parallels Union St. and passes the former Adams St. grade crossing as it heads north at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 31 May '20. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

IC 3110
Title:  IC 3110
Description:  IC 3110 parallels Union St. and passes the former Monroe St. grade crossing as it works the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI, on 31 May '20. The building at right, 716 Harrison St., still used by Neenah Foundry, I believe, was recently (within the past week or two) spruced up with a fresh coat of paint and some new doors. The Winneconne Ave. overpass stands beyond that. It was erected ca. 1988 in order to eliminate the busiest grade crossing in the area. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

NCIX 7995
Title:  NCIX 7995
Description:  Looking northeast over the south end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI, on 31 May '20. One reason for this photograph is the Caterpillar and John Deere vehicles which have been loaded onto flatcars, or are waiting to be loaded, for Michels Materials. The tracks at the far right are remnants of the former C&NW main line and yard. This particular remnant of the main line has been reduced to a spur. The facility in the background at left is 5K Fibres, 1111 Henry St., Neenah, WI, based in Greenville, WI. They purchased the former Kimberly-Clark Corp. (K-C) Neenah Nonwovens Facility ca. Apr. '20.

Description:  A CN container train approaches the W. Bell St. overpass as it heads southwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI, on 5 Jun. '20. A remnant of the former C&NW main line, now relegated to a passing siding, runs parallel along the other side of the train. A pair of facilities owned by Warehouse Specialists, Inc. (WSI), both originally Kampo warehouses, stand in the background. Both have spurs for rail service, but the turnout connecting them to the passing siding was removed quite a while ago.

Something old, something new...
Title:  Something old, something new...
Description:  Looking southeast at the CN rails from the intersection of Towmen Rd. and Ehlers Rd. at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 5 Jun. '20. Some brand new signals have recently been installed, waiting to take over for the old signals. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. The track in the foreground is the former SOO main line. The track in the background forms the transition to the former C&NW rails.

IC 9568
Title:  IC 9568
Description:  A CN local parallels Union St. and approaches the Main St. overpass as it heads north at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 6 Jun. '20. The parking lot to the left of the train was the site of the WC (later SOO) depot, built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., is partially visible above the locomotive's cab. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

Title:  IC 9568
Description:  A CN local traverses the west leg of the wye and passes the Main St. overpass as it heads northwest at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 6 Jun. '20. Local had one locomotive, IC 9568, with some unique, expedient hand-stenciling. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here. In the background, beyond the north leg of the wye, lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye. A large quantity of fill is being added to the eastern half of the park, in preparation of future improvements. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) dominated the eastern half of the landfill/park from its opening in Jan. '98 until demolition was completed in the spring of '16.
