Album Info:Most, if not all, of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the spring of 2020, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

Title:  CN 2246, IC 2718, CN 8002, BCOL 4652, et al.
Description:  A CN through freight rests along Union St. at the former Sherry St. grade crossing at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 10 Apr. '20. Train had five locomotives, CN 2246, IC 2718, CN 8002, BCOL 4652, CN 5261. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

IC 3108
Title:  IC 3108
Description:  IC 3108 rests near the depot/yard office at the CN, former C&NW, yard at Appleton Junction, WI, on 11 Apr. '20. There used to be a diamond right about where the sidewalk leading to the front door of the depot/yard office is, from ca. 1874 until at least 1968, where the MLS&W crossed the C&NW. When the MLS&W was absorbed by the C&NW on 1 Sep. 1893, their line became the Ashland Div. of the C&NW. The white building behind the depot/yard office is the former home of the Harry H. Long Moving and Storage Co., 1001 S. Douglas St. This building dates to at least 1953, when it was listed in the local directory (it was not listed in ’51). The building has a spur, but it hasn’t been used for quite a while (except for occasional MoW equipment). Now called Harry H. Long Moving Storage & Express, Inc., the company, founded in 1917, is still family owned. It moved to a larger facility in Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI in 2001.

Description:  LMIX RG316 does its thing along the CN main line past the former SOO yard along Harrison St. at Neenah, WI, on 17 Apr. '20. What an impressive piece of mechanical engineering. I've encountered this unit several times over the years, but this is the first time I've seen it grinding. The W. Cecil St. overpass (Timothy Hamblin Bridge) can be seen in the background at the right. The overpass, erected to eliminate the grade crossing, opened to traffic on 20 Nov. '07.

Title:  CN 3075, CN 3058, LMIX RG316
Description:  A CN container train traverses the S-curve at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 18 Apr. '20. Train had two locomotives, CN 3075 pulling as well as CN 3058 mid-train. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot can be seen to the left of the lead locomotive. There are rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties stacked upon it. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. To the right, LMIX RG316 rests upon the north leg of the wye. Eggers Div. of VT Industries, 164 N. Lake St., an active rail customer, dominates the horizon. Founded at Neenah, WI, in 1910 as Hardwood Products Co., construction of the facility commenced in Oct. ’10. It was renamed Hardwood Products Corp. as a result of a merger with Mississippi Veneer & Lumber Co. on 20 Apr. ’22 (the latter company was formed by the same businessmen who founded the Neenah company). Eggers Industries acquired Hardwood Products Corp. in 1965 and renamed it Eggers Hardwood Products Corp. Eggers was founded by Fred W. Eggers at Two Rivers, WI in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products. The name was changed to simply Eggers Industries at some point. It was acquired by Holstein, IA, based VT Industries, Inc., on 2 Oct. ’18.

EJE 703, IC 9601, IC 9568
Title:  EJE 703, IC 9601, IC 9568
Description:  Looking south over the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard from the Winneconne Ave. overpass at Neenah, WI, on 18 Apr. '20. Locomotives include EJE 703, IC 9601, IC 9568. I wish I could photograph this scene without the handrail in the foreground, but the morons who designed this overpass (with the tacit approval of the morons who pretend to be the local government) only incorporated a sidewalk on one side of the bridge, the north side. There is no provision for bicycles to safely cross the overpass, except to use the unusually narrow sidewalk. However, the sidewalk is too narrow for bicycles and pedestrians to safely pass each other. Sure, bicyclists are legally entitled to use the roadway, but you will risk your life if you are foolish enough to exercise that legal right. The majority of motorists drive like idiots on Winneconne Ave. (as well as just about every other freeway, interstate, highway, county road, country road, back road, gravel road, dirt road, access road, public street, private street, driveway, pioneer trail, parking lot, and all-too-often sidewalk, in the United States). The Main St. overpass was ill-designed in the same manner. This ineptly designed overpass was constructed ca. 1988, so we will probably have to wait 20 years, or more, for an overpass with sufficient sidewalks and bike lanes on both sides.

Description:  A CN through freight slowly approaches N. Lake St. as it pulls out to head northwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI, on 18 Apr. '20. I am intrigued by the interesting weathering on the lower front of the lead locomotive. A nice, sunny day often brings a few railfans to this grade crossing. A young, enthusiastic railfan records the action with his cellular telephone. The youngster's hand is going up to wave to the train crew, and the conductor is sliding his window open to return the wave. Herb and Dolly Smith Park lies beyond the fence at left.

GTW 4924
Title:  GTW 4924
Description:  A CN local passes the former C&NW Neenah-Menasha depot as it serves a couple of customers on Doty Island at Neenah, WI on 22 Apr. '20. This C&NW Neenah-Menasha depot, 500 N. Commercial St., Neenah, WI, was opened on 2 October 1892, to replace the old depot which stood on the opposite side of Commercial St. The firm of Decker & Gindle had commenced construction in the fall of 1891, as soon as W. E. Wheeler of Menasha finished excavating the basement. The depot was designed by Charles Sumner Frost in the Victorian Romanesque style, or the Romanesque Revival style, depending on which reference you choose to believe. It was built with Duck Creek stone, Bayfield brown stone, and St. Louis brick, protected by a roof of black slate with copper trim, at a cost of approximately $30,000. The railroad closed the depot in the 1980s, and it stood vacant and unmaintained until 1991, when it was purchased by G-Group, Inc. Restoration was completed in 1994, and it is currently home to Gries Architectural Group, Inc., and Sturtevant & Associates, LLC. Many thanks to the late, great Larry Easton, from whose writings I obtained some of this valuable information. The border between the Twin Cities of Neenah and Menasha bisects the yard about 200 feet north of the depot.

CN 3080 and CN 8963
Title:  CN 3080 and CN 8963
Description:  A CN container train crosses Kampo Rd. as it heads southwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI, on 24 Apr. '20. Train had two locomotives, CN 3080 and CN 8963. A remnant of the former C&NW main line, now relegated to a passing siding, runs parallel along the other side of the train. A pair of facilities owned by Warehouse Specialists, Inc. (WSI), both originally Kampo warehouses, stand in the background to the left. Both are home to multiple tenants and have spurs for rail service, but the turnout connecting them to the passing siding was removed quite a while ago.

GTW 5836
Title:  GTW 5836
Description:  A CN local passes Arrowhead Park as it pulls up to clear the north leg of the wye so it can back onto the east leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 24 Apr. '20. The P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill was the backdrop for this scene for 135 years, the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874. Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006, the mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009. I was standing where the paper mill's water treatment facility had been. The corporate headquarters of Plexus, 1 Plexus Way (at left), and an Ascension clinic (originally Affinity) at 101 Main St. (at right) occupy most of the site of the old paper mill. Some people think these new buildings look nice, I think they look like crap. I abhor modern, so-called, architecture. Neenah's newest, modern eyesore, the Gateway office building (also used by Plexus), is partially visible in the background, to the left of the Ascension clinic. After razing some more cool, old buildings, construction commenced on 4 May '16 and was completed about a year later. Some of Neenah's other, bland, unimaginative, modern buildings loom in the background. There is no room for historic buildings or classic architecture in Future Neenah. Arrowhead Park is a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the waves at the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts lapped at these tracks.

Signals at Shawano Junction
Title:  Signals at Shawano Junction
Description:  Looking southwest along the CN rails from Towmen Rd., at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 25 Apr. '20. Near the bases of the existing block signals, you can see recently installed new bases and conduit for new signals which will be installed soon. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails (background to the right). The track in the foreground connects to the former C&NW rails. The telephone poles to the left stand along an abandoned portion of the C&NW right-of-way. The Jacobsen Rd. overpass can be seen in the background.

GTW 4907
Title:  GTW 4907
Description:  A CN local passes the Main St. overpass at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 26 Apr. '20. Union St. can be seen to the left. The former Sherry St., Caroline St., and Adams St. grade crossings can also be seen. Arrowhead Park and Little Lake Butte des Morts can be seen beyond the Main St. overpass. Adams St. was originally Washington St., until at least 1913. I'm curious to learn what Washington did to incense the "great" City of Neenah. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

Description:  A CN local traverses the yard lead as a container train approaches at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 26 Apr.'20. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished. The tan 4- or 5-story facility in the background to the right is, or was, Kimberly-Clark Corp. (K-C) Neenah Nonwovens Facility, 1111 Henry St. The Neenah Nonwovens Facility was slated to close by 31 May '19. It was purchased by 5K Fibres, based in Greenville, WI, ca. Apr. '20.

Description:  A CN through freight parallels Ehlers Rd. and approaches Towmen Rd. as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 9 May. '20. Train had three locomotives, CN 2984, GECX 2038, CN 5273. The train is about to transition to the former C&NW rails. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. Some work is under way to prepare for the installation of some brand new signals. Evidence of some illegal dumping can also be seen.
