Album Info:Here are several original photos by Mr. George Niles, Jr., that were taken at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, perhaps during 1952. I purchased all of these photos via a series of eBay auctions on Wednesday, 06 February 2019.

Shown here is the well-known "Horseshoe Curve" sign with pertinent data about the Curve. "Designed and Built by the National Youth Administration." Perhaps Mr. Niles is one of the two gentlemen pictured here.

Description:  Niles. Here is the second of eight original photos by George Niles, Jr., that were taken at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, perhaps during 1952. Shown here is PRR engine #6171, a J-1 (2-10-4) "Texas" built in Juniata during September of 1944 and retired in October of 1957 after just 13 years of revenue service. It is pulling a mineral train around the Curve and down the Allegheny Mountains to the Eastbound Receiving Yards in Altoona.

Description:  Niles. Here is the third of eight original photos by George Niles, Jr., that were taken at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, perhaps during 1952. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #5368 and #5508. Both locomotives were built in Juniata. #5368 is a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in May of 1924 and retired in September of 1955. #5508 is a T-1 (4-4-4-4) "Duplex" built in December of 1945 and retired in March of 1952. They are pulling a passenger train around the Curve and up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where the K-4S will uncouple and return to Altoona for yet another helper run up "The Mountain."

Description:  Niles. Here is the fourth of eight original photos by George Niles, Jr., that were taken at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, perhaps during 1952. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #8798 and #8507. Both are ES-15M road switchers built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #8798 was built in January of 1952, while #8507 is was built in August of 1952. They are serving as helpers for a mail and express train that's rounding the Curve on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they will uncouple and return to Altoona for yet another helper run up "The Mountain." Also visible is PRR/Railway Express Service cabin car #5010.

Description:  Niles. Here is the fifth of eight original photos by George Niles, Jr., that were taken at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, perhaps during 1952. Shown here are two PRR Class I-1 (2-10-0) "Decapod" steam locomotives serving as helpers, one of which has a "coast-to-coast" tender. They're rounding the Curve with what could be an iron-ore train and heading up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they'll uncouple and head back to East Altoona to begin yet another helper-pusher run up "The Mountain." The number of the N-5C cabin car is not recorded.

Both are Class I-1 (2-10-0) "Decapods." #4573 was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an I-1S during September of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in November of 1942, and retired in November of 1955 after 32 years of faithful service. The number of the N-5 cabin car is not recorded. (#1 of 2)

Shown here is PRR engine #6438, a J-1 (2-10-4) "Texas" built in Juniata during October of 1943. It's rounding the Curve with a mixed-cargo freight train on its way down the Allegheny Mountains to the Eastbound Receiving Yards in Altoona. Also visible at the far left is the white smoke plume of a train heading up "The Mountain" toward the Curve and points West.
