It is pulling a mineral train around the Curve and down the Allegheny Mountains to the Eastbound Receiving Yards in Altoona. |

Niles. Here is the third of eight original photos by George Niles, Jr., that were taken at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, perhaps during 1952. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #5368 and #5508. Both locomotives were built in Juniata. #5368 is a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in May of 1924 and retired in September of 1955. #5508 is a T-1 (4-4-4-4) "Duplex" built in December of 1945 and retired in March of 1952. They are pulling a passenger train around the Curve and up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where the K-4S will uncouple and return to Altoona for yet another helper run up "The Mountain." |

Niles. Here is the fourth of eight original photos by George Niles, Jr., that were taken at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, perhaps during 1952. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #8798 and #8507. Both are ES-15M road switchers built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #8798 was built in January of 1952, while #8507 is was built in August of 1952. They are serving as helpers for a mail and express train that's rounding the Curve on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they will uncouple and return to Altoona for yet another helper run up "The Mountain." Also visible is PRR/Railway Express Service cabin car #5010. |

Shown here are two PRR Class I-1 (2-10-0) "Decapod" steam locomotives serving as helpers, one of which has a "coast-to-coast" tender. They're rounding the Curve with what could be an iron-ore train and heading up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they'll uncouple and head back to East Altoona to begin yet another helper-pusher run up "The Mountain." The number of the N-5C cabin car is not recorded. |
