PRR 6171, J-1, c. 1952
Niles. Here is the second of eight original photos by George Niles, Jr., that were taken at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, perhaps during 1952. Shown here is PRR engine #6171, a J-1 (2-10-4) "Texas" built in Juniata during September of 1944 and retired in October of 1957 after just 13 years of revenue service. It is pulling a mineral train around the Curve and down the Allegheny Mountains to the Eastbound Receiving Yards in Altoona.
