PRR "Decapod" Helpers, c. 1952
Niles I. Here is the fifth of eight original photos by George Niles, Jr., that were taken at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, perhaps during 1952. Shown here are two PRR Class I-1 (2-10-0) "Decapod" steam locomotives serving as helpers, one of which has a "coast-to-coast" tender. They're rounding the Curve with what could be an iron-ore train and heading up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they'll uncouple and head back to East Altoona to begin yet another helper-pusher run up "The Mountain." The number of the N-5C cabin car is not recorded.
