PRR Westbound Pushers, c. 1951
Baera 2. Here is a photo by an unidentified photographer that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1951. Prominent here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9689 and two more units whose road numbers are not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9689 was constructed as an EH-15 in February of 1949, later regeared and reclassified as an EF-15A, and retired in August of 1967 after just 18 years of revenue service. In this context, this A-B-A set is pushing a westbound mixed-cargo freight train around the Curve and up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they'll be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona for their next helper/pusher run up "The Mountain." The road number of the N-5C cabin car pictured here is not recorded. (Track 2)
