Chesapeake Western Railway #102
Title:  Chesapeake Western Railway #102
Description:  Built by the Richmond Locomotive Works in 1895 with construction number 2186, #102 would spend it's entire life hauling passenger trains along the lines of the Chesapeake Western Railway between Elkton, Virginia, and Harrisonburg, Virginia. Originally delivered for the Chesapeake & Western Railroad as #102 with the name "Lizzie Allison", the locomotive was probably purchased with funds from the estate of W. E. D. Stokes who was the owner and directer of the railroad at that point in time. On March 3, 1900, Stokes officially decided to change the name of the railroad from the Chesapeake & Western Railroad to the Tidewater & West Virginia Railroad. This new name didn't stick though because the railroad never actually extended into West Virginia. This led Stokes to revert the name back to the Chesapeake & Western and immediately lease the line to the newly incorporated Chesapeake Western Railway which itself was established on March 13, 1901 with the same management. At some point while working on the Chesapeake Western, the name "Lizzie Allison" was removed from the side of the locomotive cab and the engine was then on only known as #102. The locomotive was still in active service as late as 1937 as seen in this photograph, but was probably running on borrowed time as it was retired in the late 1930's and scrapped. This photograph displays #102 stopped with a passenger train at the Elkton, Virginia, passenger station. The first passenger car being the locomotive's tender appears to be a baggage car. Month and year are correct. Exact date is an estimate.

CV 4-4-0 #106 - Central Vermont
Title:  CV 4-4-0 #106 - Central Vermont
Description:  Although strangely tilted, this original photo corrected from the heavily sepia color shows an Schenectady (before the ALCO consolidation) 4-4-0 American type steam locomotive, Central Vermont #106, built in July of 1892. Thanks to the research effort of Chuck Zeiler, there is a more complete story to this loco. Originally the loco was built as Adirondack & St Lawrence #101. It became Central Vermont #129 later in 1892 but was renumbered #106 in 1900 as it appears in this photo. The loco was given a new boiler in 1921 and reclassified as B-3a. The loco was finally scrapped in May of 1941. Specs - serial #3878, 78" drivers, 160 psi boiler pressure, 18.5x24" cylinders, engine weight of 103,300 lb. Thanks, Chuck, for the help! A note on the back states "Train 2 - CV 106, motor trailer coach & baggage #153, baggage & mail #152." This loco has the unusual distinction of being the last CV 4-4-0 to be scrapped having lasted 11 years longer than any other CV 4-4-0. It met the scrapper's torch in May of 1941 after nearly 49 years of service. No location or photographer was listed for the photo.

Winslow’s Mill is located on the Rockland Branch just west of Waldoboro near the State Rt 32 Xing according to my map. Today this trackage is owned by the State of Maine and in the 2010 to 2015 time frame was operated by the Maine Eastern (aka Morristown & Erie). The Central Maine & Quebec is set to take over operation of the branch in early 2016. MEC #200, origionally from #156 in 1900 came from Schnacatady builder number 4227 built in November 1894 and wrecked in November of 1920. An MEC Class L 4-4-0, cyl 19x24 with 69inch drivers. /DL

CNW 4-4-0 #203 - Chicago & North Western
Title:  CNW 4-4-0 #203 - Chicago & North Western
Description:  Although an F3A would wear the same #203 later, the first to do so was this 1899 Schenectady built American type locomotive. An example of the B class locomotives that served the CNW in the early years, this loco had spindly looking 75" drivers but could develop a respectable 190 psi boiler pressure for its 19.5"x26" cylinders. The engine weight was a delicate 137,000 lb and it could generate a modest tractive effort of 21,289 lb, enough to handle the lighter, smaller trains of its day. Simple, unobstructed style - must have been much easier to work on than the later models built 40 years later! It is shown parked at the CNW shops in Chicago. The date is approximate.

SLSF 4-4-0 #223 - St Louis-San Francisco (Frisco)
Title:  SLSF 4-4-0 #223 - St Louis-San Francisco (Frisco)
Description:  This Alco-Rhode Island 4-4-0 steam locomotive built in 6/18/1903 as SLSF #223 looks like it has reached the storage/scrap line in its life. The serial number 27823 and build date of 6/18/1903 were written on the back of the photo. As yet, I can't confirm or revoke them as being accurate. Does anyone know either?
