PRR 5819, BP-60, 1952
Title:  PRR 5819, BP-60, 1952
Description:  Lorenz. Here is a photo via Bob Lorenz that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in 1952. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8800, #5819, and another "Centipede" whose road number is not recorded. #8800 is an ES-15M built by GM-EMD in January of 1952 and rated at 1,500 horsepower. #5819 and its mate are both BP-60's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as BP-60's rated at 3,000 horsepower each, but later regeared and classified as BH-50's rated at 2,500 horsepower each. #5819 was built in January of 1948 and retired in April of 1962. In this context, they're ascending the Allegheny Mountains and rounding the Curve with a mail and express train bound for Pittsburgh ~ but at Gallitzin, the "Geep" will uncouple and return to the Altoona Passenger Station for yet another helper run up "The Mountain." (Gift from Brad Mann.)

PRR 5819, BH-50, 1960
Title:  PRR 5819, BH-50, 1960
Description:  Celebration. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide via Al Chione that was taken at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Erecting & Machine Shop storage yard in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in April of 1960. The photographer is not identified. Shown here (L to R) is PRR engine #5819 and another "Centipede" whose road number is not recorded. Both are BH-50's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as BP-60 passenger engines rated at 3,000 horsepower each, but later regeared and reclassified as 2,250 horsepower BH-50's for freight and helper service only. #5819 was constructed in January of 1948 and retired in April of 1962 after just 14 years of revenue service. In this context, they're awaiting disposition and eventual scrapping.

PRR 5819, BH-50, 1964
Title:  PRR 5819, BH-50, 1964
Description:  Centipedes. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad "Centipede" locomotives in Frankstown, Pennsylvania, on 16 March 1964. Shown here (L to R) are three drawbar-linked pairs of PRR engines: #5819-#5825, #5817-#5829, and #5815-#5830. All were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during 1947 (viz., #5825, #5817, & #5815) or 1948 (viz., #5819, #5829, & #5830). They are about to be scrapped after only 16 years of service! These engines were built originally for passenger service; each unit generated 3,000 horsepower, so they were classified as BP-60's. Due to various chronic problems, however, they were all converted to helper-only units by 1952; each unit generated only 2,500 horsepower then, so they were reclassified as BH-50's.
