Title:
PRR 5829, BP-60, c. 1950
Description:
Celebration. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide via Martin Zak that was taken in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, c. 1950. Shown here (L to R) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5829 and another "Centipede" whose road number is not recorded. Both are BP-60's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as BP-60 passenger engines rated at 3,000 horsepower each, but later regeared and reclassified as 2,250 horsepower BH-50's for freight and helper service only. #5829 was constructed in December of 1948 and retired in April of 1962 after just 16 years of revenue service. In this context, they're navigating the interlocking just West of the Harrisburg Passenger Station, visible in the distance on the right. Barely visible behind them is a PRR steam locomotive, perhaps a K-4S "Pacific."

PRR 5819, BH-50, 1964
Description:
Centipedes. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad "Centipede" locomotives in Frankstown, Pennsylvania, on 16 March 1964. Shown here (L to R) are three drawbar-linked pairs of PRR engines: #5819-#5825, #5817-#5829, and #5815-#5830. All were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during 1947 (viz., #5825, #5817, & #5815) or 1948 (viz., #5819, #5829, & #5830). They are about to be scrapped after only 16 years of service! These engines were built originally for passenger service; each unit generated 3,000 horsepower, so they were classified as BP-60's. Due to various chronic problems, however, they were all converted to helper-only units by 1952; each unit generated only 2,500 horsepower then, so they were reclassified as BH-50's.

Shown here (L to R) are two drawbar-linked pairs of PRR engines: #5824-#5811 and #5817-#5829. All were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during 1947 (viz., #5824, #5811, & #5817) or 1948 (viz., #5829). They are about to be scrapped after only 16 years of service! Also visible in the foreground is my pet dog "Millie," who has just completed her own inspection tour of these soon-to-be-dispatched "Centipedes."

Centipede Celebration, Page 24, 1973
Description:
Here is page two of a six-page camera study celebrating the Pennsylvania Railroad's "Centipede" locomotives. It was published originally in the May-June 1973 issue of "PC Railroader" magazine, page 24. All of these locomotives were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as 3,000 horsepower BP-60's for passenger service, but later regeared and downgraded to 2,500 horsepower BH-50's for freight and helper service. Top Photo: Both are BH-50's rated at 2,500 horsepower each. On the right, #5827 was built in October of 1948 and retired in September of 1962. On the left, #5817 was built in December of 1947 and retired in September of 1962. Middle Photo: On the left is PRR engine #5825, a BP-60 built in May of 1947, rated at 3,000 horsepower, and retired in April of 1962. Bottom Photo: Both are BH-50's rated at 2,500 horsepower each. On the right, #5819 was built in January of 1948 and retired in April of 1962. On the left, #5829 was built in December of 1948 and retired in April of 1962.
