CB&Q 2-6-6-2 Class T-2 4100
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-6-6-2 Class T-2 4100 at Denver, Colorado on October 23, 1948, photographer unknown, print by Gordon C. Bassett, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 4100 was built by Baldwin in February 1910 (c/n 34230) and retired in August 1950. The CB&Q had 10 Class T-2 locomotives delivered in 1910, numbers 4100-4109, built as coal burners. The coal bunkers were hinged and could be tilted to force the coal forward as the supply was depleted. The design was known as a Ryan and Johnson coal pusher, and the tilting segment can be seen along the diagonal line at the forward part of the tender. In 1919 the U.S. Forest Service required locomotives operating in the Black Hills of South Dakota region be oil burners, and number 4101 was the first so modified. Eventually all but three of the T-2's were converted to burn oil by 1927, although 4100 was briefly converted back to coal when assigned to the Beardstown Division. The sand dome behind the stack was added by the CB&Q during the late 1920's to most of the T-2's.

CB&Q 2-6-6-2 Class T-2 4101
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-6-6-2 Class T-2 4101 at Denver, Colorado, date and photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. The chosen date (sometime in 1948) based on a photo of the other side of this same locomotive in the same condition. It shows two cross compound air pumps over the rear engine and an Elesco feedwater heater pump over the front engine. Usually there will be associated equipment on the other side of the boiler to balance the load.

Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-6-6-2 Class T-2 4101 at Denver, Colorado on November 25, 1948, photograph by Richard H. Kindig, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 4101 was built by Baldwin in February 1910 (c/n 34231) and dismantled in August 1950. This was one of ten 2-6-6-2's built for the CB&Q in 1910, road numbers 4100-4109. All were built as coal burners, and all but three were converted to burn oil to comply with the U.S. Forest Service requirement that locomotives assigned to the Black Hills, South Dakota Division burn oil.

CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4943
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4943 at Bevier, Missouri on June 9, 1959, photograph by S. Kistler, print by Gordon C. Bassett, Chuck Zeiler collection. This locomotive was leased to the Bevier & Southern Railroad and they applied the slogan seen on the tender. Number 4943 was built by Baldwin in May 1923 (c/n 56575) and is presumed to have been scrapped around 1961 when it was replaced on the B&S by CB&Q 4963 due to expired flues on 4943.

Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4943 at Ardmore, Missouri on November 11, 1960, Kodachrome by unknown photographer, Chuck Zeiler collection. Built by Baldwin in May 1923 (c/n 56575), this locomotive was leased to the ten mile coal hauler Bevier & Southern in 1959 to replace CB&Q 4955, who's flues had expired. It worked on the B&S until 1963, when it was eventually replaced See Comment below, thanks L. Beckman) with CB&Q NW2 9400A. Presumably the slogan, Have Train - Will Haul, was borrowed from the popular television show of the late 1950's, early 1960's, Have Gun - Will Travel.

CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4952
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4952 at Centralia, Illinois on May 12, 1956, photographer unknown, print by Tom Klinger, Chuck Zeiler collection. This might be a good photo to explain (as I understand it) the Elesco Feed Water System, named for the initials in the manufacturer's name, the Locomotive Superheater Compaany, LSCo. The water in the tender was piped up in the diagonal pipe below the cab to the pump above the rear driver, then pumped up to the cylindrical device located between the headight and stack. There coiled pipes of cold tender water would pass through a chamber of hot steam, pre-heating and routing the heated tender water through the check valve below the sand dome.

CB&Q 2-8-2 O-1-A 4960
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on August 7, 1961, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. This photo shows two personal experiences by myself. The first is the angle of this photo, achievable only from the bedroom of the house next to the tracks on Loomis Street in Naperville, and I happened to live there. Unfortunately, my bedroom was on the side away from the tracks, so I had to run into my parents room to get this shot. The second experience was that I participated in the railfan safety violation as seen here. The idea was to wait in the power car until the Conductor got busy elsewhere. Then we ran through the generator room and would hang out on the forward vestibule riding right up against the tender, until we got caught, and this was before the canteen tender was added. Good experiences, good smells too.
