In 1916 this locomotive was again renumbered, this time becoming 193. It was retired in December 1922.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 0-6-0 Class G-10 589 at Denver, Colorado on March 23, 1958, photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. This photo presents a date problem. The print is marked 03/23/58, and the book, Steam Locomotives Of The Burlington Route, indicates that it was sold for scrap in May 1954. Number 589 was built by Baldwin in 1904 as 2-6-2, class R-4 number 1921 (c/n 24497), rebuilt by the CB&Q in April 1930 to an 0-6-0, class G-10 number 589. From what I've observed, CB&Q Engineers operating 0-6-0's tended to sit on the window while switching.

CB&Q 2-4-2 Class N-1 590
Title:  CB&Q 2-4-2 Class N-1 590
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-4-2 Class N-1 590 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on an unknown date in 1895, photograph by Baldwin Locomotive Works, Chuck Zeiler collection. The following is excerpted from the book, Steam Locomotives Of The Burlington Route by Bernard G. Corbin and William F. Kerka:

One of the truly high steppers used on the Burlington was the class N-1 2-4-2 Columbia type built by Baldwin in 1895 and assigned to the road as No. 590. The engine was an experimental design, and was to handle a train of six cars from Chicago to Galesburg in three hours, for an average speed of over 54 mph. It was one of the first engines designed for burning bituminous coal with a wide firebox placed to the rear of the driving wheels and over the trailing truck. The boiler was of a straight-top type with a combustion chamber extending forward from the firebox. Unfortunately this combination did not prove entirely satisfactory, and the engine was rebuilt in 1897 with a new firebox, the combustion chamber being omitted. The 2-4-2 type had 84¼ inch drivers with cast steel centers. The first pair of drivers was equalized with the leading truck, and underhung springs were used under all wheels. The cylinders were 19X26 inches and inboard piston valves of 10 inches diameter were located above the front frame extension. The valve link motion was placed entirely between the driving wheels. The tender appears to have been influenced by European design, since it was of a six-wheel type with all three axles held in place by a rigid frame. The springs on the second and third axles were connected by equalizing bars. Although the N-1 engine was never duplicated, its design features were adopted on the 4-4-2 type locomotives that were to follow. In 1905 the Columbia type was rebuilt to a 4-4-2 wheel arrangement, reclassed as P-4, re-numbered 2599 and retired in November 1929.

Title:  CB&Q 4-6-0 Class K-1 615
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-0 Class K-1 615, date, location, and photographer unknown, print by Don Gruber, Chuck Zeiler collection. The location and date are based on information from the book, Steam Locomotives Of The Burlington Route. Built by the Rogers Locomotive And Machine Works in March 1892 (c/n 4680) as Burlington & Missouri River Railroad number 283, it was renumbered into the CB&Q system during 1904 to 615 and classed as K-1. It was assigned to the Saint Joseph Division as of June 1, 1935, sold to the Saint Louis and Hannibal Railroad in June 1937. It is seen here with the main rod disconnected and placed on the running board.

CB&Q 4-6-0 Class K-2 630
Title:  CB&Q 4-6-0 Class K-2 630
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-0 Class K-2 630, date, location and photographer unknown, print by Tom Klinger, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 630 was built by the Rogers Locomotive And Machine Works in September 1892 as B&MR 302 (c/n 4766), renumbered into the CB&Q system as 630 and classed as K-2. It was retired in November 1946. The date (December 1, 1944) and location (Lincoln, Nebraska) were chosen based on information in the December 1, 1944 CB&Q Locomotive Assignment Sheet, which shows this locomotive assigned to the Lincoln Division. Based on the wide space between the domes, position of the bell, and what appears to be a platform in the space between the domes, I would speculate that this locomotive was once used in commuter service. The space and platform were for the Curtis steam turbine generator to power the train lighting, likely removed and applied to the more powerful Pacific type locomotives later used in commuter service.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-0 Class K-2 637 at Galesburg, Illinois on April 5, 1959, Kodachrome by unknown photographer, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 637 was on display at the Galesburg roundhouse during a fan trip. Although there is a bit of smoke coming from the stack, the locomotive was not under steam. Oil soaked waste was tossed down the stack to create the illusion, as evidenced by the scorch marks at the lower front of the smokebox.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-0 Class K-2 655 at Hudson, Colorado on January 25, 1942, photograph by J. Schick, print by Gordon C. Bassett, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 655 was built by the Grant Locomotive Works of Cicero, Illinois (previously located in Patterson, New Jersey) in June 1893 as Burlington & Missouri River Railroad 327 (c/n 1810). It was renumbered into the CB&Q system in 1904 as number 655, classed as K-2. The book, Steam Locomotives Of The Burlington Route, shows this locomotive as dismantled in June 1942, the boiler went to another K-2, number 665. The front coupler looks a little odd.

Title:  CB&Q 4-6-0 Class K-2 657
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-0 Class K-2 657, date, location, and photographer unknown, print by Tom Klinger, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 657 was built by the Grant Locomotive Works of Cicero, Illinois in June 1893 as Burlington & Missouri River number 329 (c/n 1812) renumbered to CB&Q 657 and classed K-2 in 1904, retired in March 1943. The CB&Q Locomotive Assignment Sheet dated November 1, 1932 shows number 657 assigned to the Ottumwa Division. As it turned out, this was one of the last (if not the last) locomotives constructed by the Grant Locomotive Works. Although 55 locomotives were ordered by the CB&Q, only three were built (#'s B&MR 327, 328, 329, later, CB&Q 655, 656, 657) before a strike at the Works closed the plant. The Works went into receivership and was purchased by the Siemens & Halske Electric Company. The locomotive order was completed under the new ownership, but sold to other railroads.
