Typical motley power
Title:  Typical motley power
Description:  A leased SD 38, one of two on the railroad-the other is the last unit in this consist-a couple of patch painted SP units, and a black ex NS SD lead a 76 car train north past the ex DLW station, partly visible behind the train, at Whitney Point. This is most likely an SU 403, a train run as a detour move for CSX. This was common at the time, as CSX was doing a lot of work on their ex NYC lines from Jersey to Buffalo, so getting a low priority train off their main eased the congestion.

Sometimes odd stuff shows up
Title:  Sometimes odd stuff shows up
Description:  The UP unit came in on NS; by this time, their power and BNSF were not much of a surprise. NYSW, however, did get some interesting visitors from other upstate short lines, since they did some repair work at Utica. Such is the case today, as in this VLIX C 420 in transit to somewhere at the Binghamton yard.

Title:  Typical mix
Description:  The NYSW had a wide variety of hand me down power over the years, and they were not shy about mixing it up. Most of the time, they put the yellowjackets in the lead, but anything could show up. BH 1 crosses the Chenango River on its way to Syracuse with a pair of yellowjackets, a six and a four motor unit, leading an ex NW SD, still in black dip.

Canned
Title:  Canned
Description:  NYSW would sometimes run a train up to Chenango Forks and stash it in the siding, perhaps because there was no room to hold a long train at Binghamton without making the local jobs lives difficult. As a result, you never knew what youd find there. Today, its an ex Cartier Alco with what appears to be an ex B&M GP 40-2, now a HATX lease unit, an ex NW SD 40, and a tunnel motor.

On the Cincinnatus Branch
Title:  On the Cincinnatus Branch
Description:  Ive always found it interesting how many branch lines went off into the hills for short distances to serve small towns. One such line was the DLWs branch to Cincinnatus NY, about 15 miles east of Cortland. Though it was abandoned early-1940s-it had passenger trains. Youd think there would not be enough traffic to sustain it, but there, it was. There isnt much left now, just a couple of miles heading out toward Mc Graw, on which is located this Suit Kote plant, which we see being switched by GP 18 1800.

Open shot
Title:  Open shot
Description:  Train speeds on the Northern Division were modest, 30 MPH in most places, so chasing was not a challenge most of the time. After shooting a train at Forks, you could easily beat him to this spot, where the tracks crossed US 11 south of Whitmey Point. Here you were afforded an open view of the train as it approached the crossing. It will be a good wait for the 110 cars to clear. I wont beat him to Lisle, only three miles up, but Killawog shouldnt be a problem.

Cincinnatus branch
Title:  Cincinnatus branch
Description:  The DLW had a branch to Cincinnatus NY, southesast of Cortland that was abandoned in the early 60's. A remnant of that line was used in Cortland to reach an asphalt plant run by Suit Kote. Here we see 1800 on the Tioghnioga River bridge on the branch returning from Suit Kote.

On familiar turf
Title:  On familiar turf
Description:  A HATX lease unit leads BH 2 down the ramp at Old State Road as it heads out of Binghamton. The unit was once one of B&Ms last order of new diesels, a GP40-2 delivered in 1978, and a frequent visitor here via the D&H.

Leased power on BH 2
Title:  Leased power on BH 2
Description:  Sometimes NYSW would run short of power, and find themselves in the lease market. Sometimes this meant some really ratty looking diesels. Here we see a pair of ex Guilford units at Old State Rd in Port Dick heading north late in the day.
