BHC 2-6-0ng #9 - Black Hills Central
This Black Hills Central narrow gauge 2-6-0 #9 is a survivor with a VERY long history. Built by Cooke in February of 1888 as Denver, South Park & Pacific 2-6-0ng #114, it was renumbered DSP&P #113 in 1885. In 1889, it was sold to the Denver, Leadville & Gunnison as their #114. In 1899, it was sold again to Colorado & Southern as their #9. IN April fo 1901 it was rebuilt with a new boiler and cylinders and rebuilt again in 1917 with a new frame. During 1939-40, the loco was on display at the New York World's Fair. From 1940-1948, the loco was stored away at the CBQ Aurora, IL, shops. In 19408-49, the loco was hauled out, refurbished and labeled "Chief Crazy Horse" for the Chicago Railroad Fair. Finally in 1958, it went on permanent display at Hill City, SD. Jim Lockart captured the moment when he visitied the railroad in the fall of 1978.
