Great Northern steam engine 2-8-8-0 at Mpls Jct MN in 1947
Normally assigned to the GN iron range division the large articulated engines came through Mpls Jct MN at times and also massive 2-8-8-2s from the Rocky Mt division as well. Note the GN coaling towers at Mpls Jct MN. Horsepower around 6,300 and could haul 200 loaded ore car trains at 14,000 tons without aid. This N3 class articulated ran between Allouez and Hibbing ore mines. Steam lasted thru the fall of 1957 on the GN. Mpls Jct has a wye to turn these large engines, and the wye remains on the BNSF today.
