PRR 6779, M-1B, 1959
Volkmer. Here is an original 35mm color slide by William D. Volkmer that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 8 September 1959. Prominent here (R to L) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6779 and two more locomotives whose road numbers are not recorded. #6779 is an M-1B (4-8-2) "Mountain" built by the Lima Locomotive Works as an M-1A in March of 1930, rebuilt in Juniata as an M-1B in December of 1948, and retired in September of 1959 after 29 years of faithful service. In this context, they've been prepared for movement to the Recycling Center. Partially visible in the distance is the East Altoona Coaling Tipple.
