PRR 2-10-4 #6421 - Pennsylvania RR
Beautiful action shot at Horseshoe Curve of the powerful Pennsylvania 2-10-4 #6421 heading up a long string of freight cars through the historic Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, PA. Built in Pennsy's own Altoona shops in July of 1943, this loco produced an impressive boiler pressure of 275 and even more impressive tractive force of 95,484 lb! No wonder that PRR kept thses brutes long after diesels were making inroads on other steam locomotives. #6421 was finally retired in November of 1958 after only a short 15 year service record. No PRR 2-10-4 were preserved. No date was given so an approximate one was used. No photographer was listed but it very well may have been J.R. Quinn.
