KCS Train No. 54
Kansas City Southern train No. 54 was leaving New Orleans behind GP40-2 799, F7A slug 4060, and GP40-2 797. The 799 was built in August 1979 along with the 798, while the 797 came in February 1981 along with the 796. Between April and September 1981 the railroad ran slugs 4050 and 4060 into New Orleans between pairs of GP40-2’s, as shown here. While all four of the GP40-2’s were set up to power slugs, the slugs could only draw power from one end, so the second geep didn’t contribute any horsepower to the slug. The use of road slugs into New Orleans resumed in August 1982, between a GP40-2 and another geep. This continued through the end of 1990 when the arrival of SD60’s and used geeps enabled the railroad to retire its road slugs.
