PRR Gallitzin Tunnels, #2 of 2, c. 1904
iLocations. Here is the second of two images showing the western portals of two Pennsylvania Railroad tunnels in Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, c. 1904. At the right, steam engine smoke drifts out of the now single-tracked Allegheny Tunnel. At the left, work has now been completed on the single-tracked Gallitzin Tunnel. These two tunnels are used primarily for westbound traffic. Eastbound traffic now flows through the recently-renovated, double-tracked New Portage Tunnel ~ which was completed in 1856 for the New Allegheny Portage Railroad, later owned but little used by the PRR, and virtually abandoned for almost 50 years. The photographer's name and the date are not recorded.
