Northbound Southern Train
A northbound Southern Railway train was heading through Slidell, Louisiana behind an unusual set of six units ? five GP30’s and a GP35. When this photo was taken, three 6-axle or four 4-axle units were the normal power on road trains. Six geeps had been common on Southern trains 153/154 in the mid-1960’s, but this ended after the railroad’s first SD45’s arrived in 1967. The railroad then used four big 6-axle units to replace six geeps until the addition of trains 114/115 and 193/194 a few years later resulted in more but shorter trains with fewer locos. (approximate date of photo)
