| Built by the American Locomotive Works Richmond Plant in November of 1911 with construction number 43195, #111 was originally purchased by the Norfolk & Western Railway as part of an order of fifty class M-1 Mastodon type 4-8-0 locomotives. The Norfolk & Western also received fifty class M-1's from the Baldwin locomotive works totaling 100 engines as part of the M-1 class. Numbered #1077 while working on the Norfolk & Western Railway, the locomotive was assigned mainline duty until the late 1930's when more powerful articulates were placed on the road to command massive coal drags from West Virginia to Lambert's Point on the East Coast. Trying to shed some extra motive power, the Norfolk & Western agreed to sell six mastodons to the Chesapeake Western Railway which was run by Don W. Thomas at the time. #1077 was officially sold to the Chesapeake Western on March 2, 1943, and renumbered #111. Purchased with the intent to handle larger freight trains associated with the revival of the CW under the leadership of Don W. Thomas, the locomotive was used until being replaced by the new Baldwin switchers in the late 1940's. The locomotive, along with it's five sisters, was retired and scrapped in 1947 at the Elkton, Virginia, shops.
