PRR 8503, ES-15M, 1955
Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide by John Pickett that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 13 October 1955. According to Peter Hultgren, this photo appears on page 74 of Don Ball's (1978) book "America's Colorful Railroads." Photo Caption: "The two GP-7's are assisting two E-8 passenger locomotives pulling train #14, a fast mail and express train to Pittsburgh." In the foreground (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8503 and #8502. Both are ES-15M's built by GM-EMD in August of 1952 and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. Also note the presence of PRR engine #6154, a J-1 (2-10-4) "Texas" built in Juniata during December of 1943 and retired in April of 1959 after just 16 years of revenue service. In this context, it's running backward on Track #2 on its way back down to Altoona for yet another helper/pusher run up "The Mountain." ("LouisFols"; #27 of 31)

Peter Hultgren General I recognized this picture instantly. It appears in the book titled "America's Colorful Railroads", written by Don Ball, Jr., copyright 1978. The picture appears on page 74. The picture is credited to John Pickett as the phographer. The book says the picture was taken on October 13, 1955. The two GP-7s are assiting two E-8 passenger locomotives pulling train #14, a fast mail and express train to Pittsburgh. This book has prime location on my book shelf. It was my favorite book as a kid, a birthday gift from my parents in 1981. I read it and looked at the pictures too many times to count over the years. Thanks for bringing back the memories! 6/27/2019 9:43:02 PM
