PRR 5828, BH-50, 1954
Kern. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Fred R. Kern that was taken in Tyrone, Pennsylvania, on 25 July 1954. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #5828 and another "Centipede" whose number is not recorded. Both are BH-50's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as BP-60 passenger engines rated at 3,000 horsepower each, but later regeared and reclassified as 2,250 horsepower BH-50's for freight only. #5828 was constructed in November of 1948 and retired in April of 1962 after just 14 years of revenue service. In this context, they're about to pass through the Tyrone Passenger Station with a mineral train.
