CO 2-10-4 #3030 - Chesapeake & Ohio
Beautiful original sepia toned action shot of Chesapeake & Ohio 2-10-4 #3030 doing what it does best - hauling a long drag of coal cars. Built by Lima in 1930, these mighty machines ran from Russell, Kentucky up through Ohio to Toledo for most of their career, a few ending up in eastern Virginia. Meat and potatoes for this mighty class were 160 loaded cars of coal comprising a trailing load of 13,500 tons. Unfortunately, according to one source this class rode roughly and pounded the track to the point that a special gang stood by at the bottom of one long grade to repair the damage. Specs - serial #7546, class T-1, 69" drivers, impressive 260 psi boiler pressure, 29x34" cylinders, massive engine weight of 566,000 lb, impressive tractive effort of 91,584. The class was retired between 1952-53. No date or location given for the photo. B.F. Cutler photo
