PRR 6421, J-1A, 1953
NST. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Fred Kern that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 30 August 1953. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6421, a J-1A (2-10-4) "Texas" built in Juniata during July of 1943 and retired in April of 1958. It is pulling a mixed-cargo freight train under the 24th Street Bridge on its way up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. The signal bridge supports the home signals for SLOPE Tower, which is barely visible just beyond the Bridge. Produced and distributed by Audio-Visual Designs. (SFM)
