Here is a postal card entitled "Horse Shoe Curve on P. & N.W.R.R., Altoona, Pa." No Postmark. The artist is not identified. Caption On Reverse: "Horse-Shoe Curve on P. & N. W. R. R., Altoona, Pa. ~ The city of Altoona is located at the east base of the Allegheny Mountains at an elevation of 1,180 feet above sea level, where the railroad begins to ascend the mountains at a grade of 90 feet to the mile. Horse-Shoe Curve is the most picturesque spot in the Alleghenies, and is located about a mile from Altoona. Population about 55,000." Note that there are only two tracks present in this depiction; the third and fourth tracks were added in 1898 and 1900 respectively. |
