Monkey in the middle  Contributor's Pick!
The LIRR was not your typical freight carrier. Their focus was primarily commuters, and they are the busiest commuter road in the US, with 90% of their revenue coming from passengers. Their freight operations were largely an afterthought under the MTA, and could get kind of odd. One such unusual practice was running power mid train. This facilitated switching facing point customer sidings, of which there were quite a few. Thus we find RF 7 with C 420 227 working from the middle as it passes Jamaica station on one of the bypass tracks south of track 8.
