LIRR H16-44 #1509 - Long Island RR  Contributor's Pick!
According to an April, 1963 issue of Railraod Magazine, this Fairbanks-Morse unit was built in 1951 for the Long Island RR and classified as a FGP-16msc member. The engine weight was 263,660 lb with a tractive effort of 36,000 lb. No information was given for the photo but with Tom Beckett's help (see comment below), I am setting the date to 1963 at Jamaica, NY. No photographer listed.

Alan Fricker General This is an early H16-still has the sculpted headlight and the rounded cab windows. The next version of these did not have those features as FM was trying to reduce production costs. 1/22/2016 10:10:32 PM
Tom Beckett General Judging by the complexity of track, and the barely visible station roof, and the apparent density of traffic, I'd say this was Jamaica. The coach partially in view to the left of the unit was built around 1955, it's a P 72 type(there were several variations). The handrails on the long hood walkway were not on the unit as built. LIRR added them in 1959. These engines were off the roster by 1964, after the first group of C420's(200-221) arrived in 1963 and 64. Thus I would date this photo some time in the 1960-1963 time frame. 1/23/2016 2:38:14 AM
