L&N RS3 157
L&N RS3 157 at East Saint Louis, Illinois on October 3, 1965, photo by Lou Schmitz, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 157 was built in January 1954 as L&N RS3 232 (c/n 80695), renumbered to 157 and later to 183. This shows the carbody filter arrangement introduced in 1953, which replaced louvers on several hood doors with a pair of doors with filters on both sides. This was the result of studies conducted in 1951 in which 'standard Arizona road dust' was introduced into the unfiltered carbody, resulting in damaged piston rings and crankshaft bearings. It was estimated that a pound of dirt could be collected by the filters in a two week period, especially under heavy-duty operation calling for increased rail sanding.
