C&NW C628 6721
C&NW C628 6721, Escanaba, Michigan, July 19, 1985, photo by Gib Allbach, Chuck Zeiler collection. Built as N&W 1120 April 1966 (c/n 3455-11), it was part of a second order for 20 C628's, numbered 1110-1129 (the first order of 10 units was numbered 1100-1109). At 204 tons, this order was the heaviest C628's built, and the N&W ordered the only high short hood versions. By 1973, the C628's were orphaned on the N&W by a large fleet of EMD's and GE's, and the C&NW bought all 30 from the N&W. They were assigned in the general service pool on the Twin Cities Division, and when the Fairbanks-Morse locomotives were retired in 1975, the Alco's were re-assigned to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. They were retired in late 1986, replaced by SD50's, and this unit left the roster October 2, 1990.
