CIRR Geep on interchange train bound for Hilton

Bryan Smith	General	This is indeed a former CofG unit. The CofG number escapes me but it became Southern 8218 which is what it was when it came to the CIRR as the first non-ALCO unit on the roster. The CIRR paid homage to Southern Railway with the number applied to it. 1830 is the year the Best Friend of Charleston made it's first run over trackage that eventually became part of Southern Railway. The small letters just above the "X" read "Best Friend". This unit was equipped with steam generators to allow it to be used in passenger service thus the air tanks were mounted on the roof and were known as "torpedo tubes". They were moved to the roof to make room for additional water tanks near the fuel tank. This photo was taken at the north end of the CIRR yard in Hilton. I know exactly where it was taken. Nice photo. I have a pic when it arrived at the CIRR shops still in Southern livery somewhere. I'll have to see if I can find it.	12/6/2010 10:47:33 PM

CIRR closed its ALCO era by adding a group of SW units and two slugs. These along with a former CofGA Geep formed the basis of the roster until it was sold to GWI in the 2000s
