Amtrak E9 420         
Amtrak E9 420 at about 18th Street in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in August 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 420 (rear facing the camera) was formerly Amtrak 1420, delivered to the UP as E9 943A (c/n 19281), built May 1954. The locomotive to the right with the plate bolted over the upper headlight is Amtrak 412, former Amtrak 1412, former UP 907A (c/n 21268), an E9 built on EMD Order 7527 using components from E3, E6, and/or E7 trade-in's. Both locomotives were leased to Amtrak in May 1972, sold to Amtrak in December 1973, retired by Amtrak in 1980 and sold to PNC and scrapped. The lowered bridge in the background is the ICG's Saint Charles Air Line.
