Southern E8A 6916
When Amtrak began operating the CRESCENT on 1 February 1979 it leased most of the Southern Railway's E8A units for six months to help power the train. Three months after the beginning of Amtrak operation, here is the northbound train crossing Bayou Pattasat -- just south of the Slidell depot -- with Southern E8A 6919, Amtak E9A's 426 and 425, and a mixture of Southern and Amtrak cars. After the lease of the Southern E-units ended the train typically ran with an F40 and two E-units. The E-units disappeared when the train received Heritage Fleet cars in 1980.
