L&N Junction - eastward view
This is a view looking eastward on Norfolk Southern's Back Belt line. The long-unused interlocking tower on the left is L&N Junction tower. This is where the CSX mainline (formerly L&N) meets the NS Back Belt. Prior to 1950s, the L&N trackage crossed here and went down Elysian Fields avenue all the way to the Mississippi River. Three parallel tracks can be seen here. The one in the immediate foreground is the "Freight Lead". Behind it can be seen the "North Main" of the NS Back Belt, and the "South Main" can be seen to the left of it past the curve. Switches can be seen where the CSX mainline joins from behind the tower. A yard job working NS's Oliver Yard is seen in the distance, and the train is occupying part of the Freight Lead. Part of an arch span of the Elysian Fields overpass can be sen around the top and left frames of the picture. The next bridge in the distance is I-10. Behind it is the Franklin Avenue overpass.
