A CN container train traverses the S-curve at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 27 Jun. '20. Train had two locomotives, CN 3850 pulling as well as CN 3236 mid-train. The historic Neenah Stove Works, currently occupied by Hafemeister Machine Corp., 635 Main St., and International Children's Fund, 619 Main St., is partially visible in the background to the left. The oldest part of the facility dates to 1857, when the Moore & Wells foundry was established. Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill, is partially visible to the right. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye. Eggers Div. of VT Industries, previously Eggers Industries, founded as Hardwood Products Co. in 1910, 164 N. Lake St., an active rail customer, stands near the center of the background. |

A CN local crosses Millview Dr. as it prepares to vacate the north leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 3 Jul. '20. The white building partially visible at left is, or was, Progressive Paper Storage, Inc. (formerly Kimberly-Clark Warehouse (K-C Warehouse)), 135 Millview Dr. It does not receive rail service, but it looks like there may have been a spur on the northwest side of the building in the past. Sadly, there are no longer any mills to be seen along Millview Dr. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) stood just out-of-frame to the right, until demolition was completed in the spring of '16. Opened in Jan. '98, it stood idle since 15 Jun. '13. I was standing where the P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill had stood for 135 years, the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874. Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006, the mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009. Arrowhead Park lies beyond the fence to the right. In the background, a CN through freight rests on the west leg of the wye. |

A CN local pauses on the former C&NW siding at Stroebe, WI, on 3 Jul. '20. Local was waiting for a northbound local. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on rrpicturearchives.net)). The train is resting under the approaches of the Roland Kampo Bridge (a.k.a. the Polish Connection) at the Hwy. 41/Hwy. 10/Hwy. 441 (a.k.a. Tri-County Expressway) interchange. The interchange opened to traffic on 30 Nov. '75, at the time it was simply a bridge to provide access to Hwy. 41 from Menasha. Seeing as it was, in some regards, a bridge to nowhere and many citizens of Menasha have Polish ancestry, it was jokingly referred to as the Polish Connection. When Hwy. 10 was reconstructed and relocated ca. '97, this interchange was not simultaneously reconstructed to form a full interchange. It was recently reconstructed and expanded; the new, now full interchange was dedicated on 11 Jul. '18. On 1 May '19, the interchange was named in honor of a local politician. I vehemently disagree with the choice made by the powers-that-be. I steadfastly believe that First Sergeant Elmer J. Burr would be a much more worthy namesake for this prominent location. First Sgt. Burr was a Wisconsin National Guard Soldier from Menasha, WI, who earned the Medal of Honor, posthumously, for his heroism and self-sacrifice on Christmas Eve of 1942 at Buna, New Guinea. The former SOO rails run parallel just out-of-frame to the left. |

A CN local, with at least 41 cars, parallels Ehlers Rd. and approaches Towmen Rd. as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) at 1506 hours on 3 Jul. '20. Local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna and had two locomotives, IC 3110 and IC 9568. The local is about to transition to the former C&NW rails. The Jacobsen Rd. overpass can be seen in the background. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. The telephone pole to the left stands along an abandoned portion of the C&NW right-of-way. To the right you can see some brand new signals waiting to take over for the old signals to the left. A CN local, with at least 41 cars, crosses Towmen Rd. as it heads northeast at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI, (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) at 1506 hours on 3 Jul. '20. Local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna and had two locomotives, IC 3110 and IC 9568, with some unique, expedient hand-stenciling. The local is transitioning from the former SOO rails to the former C&NW rails. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. |

A CN local pauses on the former C&NW siding at Stroebe, WI, on 3 Jul. '20. Local was waiting for a northbound local. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on rrpicturearchives.net)). The train is resting under the approaches of the Roland Kampo Bridge (a.k.a. the Polish Connection) at the Hwy. 41/Hwy. 10/Hwy. 441 (a.k.a. Tri-County Expressway) interchange. The interchange opened to traffic on 30 Nov. '75, at the time it was simply a bridge to provide access to Hwy. 41 from Menasha. Seeing as it was, in some regards, a bridge to nowhere and many citizens of Menasha have Polish ancestry, it was jokingly referred to as the Polish Connection. When Hwy. 10 was reconstructed and relocated ca. '97, this interchange was not simultaneously reconstructed to form a full interchange. It was recently reconstructed and expanded; the new, now full interchange was dedicated on 11 Jul. '18. On 1 May '19, the interchange was named in honor of a local politician. I vehemently disagree with the choice made by the powers-that-be. I steadfastly believe that First Sergeant Elmer J. Burr would be a much more worthy namesake for this prominent location. First Sgt. Burr was a Wisconsin National Guard Soldier from Menasha, WI, who earned the Medal of Honor, posthumously, for his heroism and self-sacrifice on Christmas Eve of 1942 at Buna, New Guinea. The former SOO rails run parallel along the other side of the train. This is the spot where N. Lake St. ends and W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. begins, although they haven't reinstalled that sign yet. Modern maps tend to omit the W. from W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. for some reason, it is also absent on the current street sign, some old maps include the W., some old maps omit the W. |
