A team track remained here for quite a few years after the freight house and yard were removed. |

A CN local, with 11 cars, crosses the Fox River Navigation Canal via the former C&NW swing bridge in 'The Flats' at Appleton, WI, on 17 Oct. '20. Train was returning from Kimberly and Combined Locks. I haven't noticed a builder's plate, but according to bridgehunter.com, the Warren through truss swing bridge was built in 1908. However, a recent contributor to that site believes it was built after 1919. A photograph caption in the Post-Crescent on 29 May 1974 states that the bridge was "nearly 50 years old." Over the past several years, I have noticed that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. For all of my life, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton has been simply ‘The Flats.’ However, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries it was referred to as 'The Water Power.' |

Former MILW Kiel, WI, Depot Site |
| Description: |
Looking southeast along the CN, formerly MILW, rails from Fremont St. at Kiel, WI, on 30 May '20. The platform for the depot stands to the left. When the depot was closed in 1970, the MILW offered to sell the building for $2,000 and rent the land under it for $160 per year. A local resident expressed the desire to purchase it, fix it up, and wait for someone interested in using it. I haven't learned how that turned out or what ultimately happened to the depot. There was a station sign here up until a couple of years ago, the post still stands in the background to the left of the platform. The historic J. B. Laun Lumber Co. stands at the far left. Jacob B. Laun purchased an existing lumber yard from Fredrick Griebenow and William Reseburg in 1884. The awesome cream colored brick building, designed by Walter F. Neumann, was built in 1924 (according to wisconsinhistory.org.). I haven't learned when the lumber yard closed, but it operated until at least 1998. I believe that the interesting buildings in the background to the right are part of the facility of Kiel Machine Works, LLC, 711 Washington St. The red flag denotes the current limit for the CN, but the rails beyond are still intact. The WSOR operates the line south of the Sheboygan River. |
