MILW 92
Title:  MILW 92
Description:  This massive, once mighty 2-6-6-2 Mogul Mallet type steam locomotive was found sitting in the scrap line at the Tacoma, WA, yard awaiting the scrapper's torch after being retired in April of 1949. The loco was first renumbered in 1912 to CMStP #9606, then CMStP&P #9606 in 1927 and finally CMStP&P #92 in 1938. The loco was finally retired and scrapped in April of 1949 after nearly 37 years of service. Specs - 57" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 23.5x30" high pressure cylinders, 37x30" low pressure cylinders, engine wt of 396,000 lb and tractive effort of 70,418 lb. DSL 2-6-6-0 #209 - Denver & Salt Lake RR
Title:  DSL 2-6-6-0 #209 - Denver & Salt Lake RR
Description:  Built by Alco-Schenectady in 1910, this articulated Mallet was originally built as a 0-6-6-0 configuration for the Denver, Northwestern & Pacific RR but this website doesn't offer that rare configuration for Alco. A leading truck was added in 1912 along with mechanical stokers by the now renamed Denver & Salt Lake RR. Specifics - Class 76 (later L-77), 55" drivers, 225 psi boiler pressure, 21x32" high pressure cylinders, 33.5x32 low pressure cylinders, engine weight of 362,000 lb, tractive effort of 70,456 lb. The class was purchased by the Denver & Rio Grande Western where they served until retirement in the late 1940's-early 1950's. Unknown photographer.

WP 2-6-6-2 #209 - Western Pacific
Title:  WP 2-6-6-2 #209 - Western Pacific
Description:  A fine photo of the 1924 Alco-Richmond built 2-6-6-2 for the Western Pacific from the Harold K. Vollrath collection. According to SteamLocomotive.com, the first 5 in the class built by Brooks in 1917 cost $52,861 each but by the time the last 5 were built by Richmond in 1924 the cost per loco had increased to $83,405. Inflation was a constant problem even back then! Specifics - M-80 class,57" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 23.5x32" high pressure cylinders, 37x32" low pressure cylinders, engine weight of 429,500 lb, tractive effort of 75,112 lb.

DSL 2-6-6-0 #215 - Denver & Salt Lake RR
Title:  DSL 2-6-6-0 #215 - Denver & Salt Lake RR
Description:  Here is another Alco-Schenectady built 2-6-6-0 Mallet configuration (although this website does not have that option for Alco's). Drury (1993) says that these locomotives were the beneficiaries of two updates to the Mallet design the railroad was already operating -- a leading truck to make it a better road engine and a mechanical stoker. They apparently served their purpose well because all but one went to the Denver & Rio Grande Western in 1947, from which they retired a few years later (1949-1951) as 3370-3375. Specifics - Class 210 (L-77), 55" drivers, 225 psi boiler pressure, 21x32" high pressure cylinders, 33.5x32 low pressure cylinders, engine weight of 361,000 lb, tractive effort of 70,456 lb. Unknown photographer and date is approximate.

MEC 1201
Title:  MEC 1201
Description:  No info with this old postcard scene except -1911 Helper over Crawford Notch-. I dont know if there was ever a ball signal at Bartlet or not but Im placing it at Bartlet for the moment. 1201 was one of 4 MEC X class locomotives from the B&M used as helpers on the Mountain. An Alco-S 2-6-6-2 built or aquired in November 1911 and scrapped 10/29. /DL

MEC 1203
Title:  MEC 1203
Description:  MEC had four of these Class X 2-6-6-2s all from the B&M and frequently used in helper service on the Mtn Division. Number 1203 was originally B&M #1293 (renumbered B&M 3002), built in November of 1910 by Alco-Schenectady. It only operated on the B&M for a year or so when it came to the MC in January of 1912. Of the four locomotives in this class it lasted the longest to be retired in 1935. This photograph apparently shows the engine on the dead line at Waterville. From the Vollrath Collection, used with permission. /DL

MEC 1204
Title:  MEC 1204
Description:  MEC had four of these 2-6-6-2s. I understand they were bought for helper service on the mountain division but did work elsewhere on the MEC, most likely between Portland and Waterville. It looks like the photographer was on a flat car for this scene. Originally from the Allen collection. Built by Alco at Schnectady it was formally B&M #1294 (renumbered to B&M 3003) built in November of 1910 and scrapped November of 1929. Builders number 48651. No date with this photo. /DL

MEC 1204
Title:  MEC 1204
Description:  I’ve ended up with two copies of this photograph over the years, one says it was taken at Portland the other in Waterville. If the October 1929 date is correct this was taken just a month before this locomotive was scrapped according to RR History. MEC had 4 of these 2-6-6-2s. I understand they were bought for helper service on the mountain division but did work elsewhere on the MEC most likely between Portland and Waterville. I don’t think they ever went to Bangor. Built by Alco at Schnectady it was formally B&M #1294 (renumbered to B&M 3003) built in November of 1910 and scrapped November of 1929. Builders number 48651. /DL

MEC 2-6-6-2 #1204 - Maine Central
Title:  MEC 2-6-6-2 #1204 - Maine Central
Description:  This same photo has been uploaded by David Larrabee but I found slightly different info on the loco. Alco-Schenectady built this massive Mallet Mogul in 1910 as B&M 1294, along with its three other sisters #1291-93. These compound Mallets were delivered to the Boston & Maine as oil-burning helpers on the Hoosac Tunnel section. Within six months, however, that portion was electrified and the quartet was sold to the Maine Central. After getting the four, Maine Central converted them to coal burners and used them on the Crawford Notch grade in New Hampshire. Specs - serial #48651, class X, 61" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 22x30" high pressure cylinders, 35x30" low pressure cylinders, engine weight of 308,000 lb, tractive effort of 58,011 lb. The loco was last of the four in the class X to be scrapped in 1934 - the others went in 1929. No date, location or photographer was listed for this older photo but Bartlett, NH, would seem to be the most likely location.
