CP 2-10-4 #5908 - Canadian Pacific
Title:  CP 2-10-4 #5908 - Canadian Pacific
Description:  Beautiful and powerful enough to handle the rugged Rockies were these Canadian Pacific 2-10-4 Selkirk type steam locomotives. This one was built in July of 1929 (serial #67929, class T-1a) by the Montreal Locomotive Works. CP called these mighty locos "Selkirks" instead of the lower US label of "Texas" style. Ten were built in the first order in 1929 with another 16 to follow later. Photo is by J.R. Quinn.

CP 2-10-4 #5909 - Canadian Pacific
Title:  CP 2-10-4 #5909 - Canadian Pacific
Description:  Long before an EMD SD40 unit carried the number 5909, this 2-10-4 Selkirk type steam locomotive had the distinct honor of wearing it for the Canadian Pacific. Built by the Montreal Locomotive Works in July of 1929 (serial #67930, class T-1a) that CP called "Selkirks" instead of traditional Texas monicker, were excellent performers in the rugged Canadian Rockies. To cut down on fuel, they were built as oil burners since a coal burner would have needed increased tender size and thus increased the weight to nearly 400 tons to go the distance that a lighter oil burner could do. CP 2-10-4 #5920
Title:  CP 2-10-4 #5920
Description:  This appears to be a photo taken by J. R. Quinn shortly after this 2-10-4 loco was delivered in 1938. After the success of the first ten 2-10-4 Selkirks ordered in 1928, Canadian Pacific put in a 2nd one to MLW. "Selkirk" is the name that CP used for the 2-10-4 configuration rather than the US version "Texas". Specs - 63" drivers, impressive 285 psi boiler pressure, 25x32" cylinders, engine weight of 447,000 lb, tractive effort of 76,905 lb.

CP 2-10-4 #5921
Title:  CP 2-10-4 #5921
Description:  By 1950, this 1938 Montreal Locomotive Works 2-10-4 Selkirk is showing its age. Still a powerful brute to handle the rugged Canadian Rockies, the dieselization was slowly creeping through the railroad industry. After heading up passenger service, the Selkirks by this time were relegated to handing mostly freight service. The entire class was scrapped in 1957, just 7 years after this photo was taken by J.R. Quinn.

Title:  CP 2-10-4 #5922
Description:  Somehow this 1938 Montreal Locomtoive Works built 2-10-4 Selkirk, #5922 (serial #69112, class T-1b), still looks good and has retained most of its decorative paint scheme. By this time, many of the Selkirks (CP's name for the Texas wheel configuration) had been relegated to freight service and painted black. Still a mighty locomotive, it could handle long drags of freight cars through the Rockies. J. R. Quinn photo

CP 2-10-4 #5931
Title:  CP 2-10-4 #5931
Description:  This is one of the last standard gauge steam locomotives to be built by Montreal Locomotive Works for a Canadian railway. CP had been impressed with the ability of this 2-10-4 oil burning steam locomotive to handle the difficult assignments, both passenger and freight, through the Canadian Rockies. This last order of 6 brought their roster total for the Selkirks (CP's name for the Texas configuration) to twenty six. The only difference between the last two orders were two cross-compound air compressors to speed recharging of the air brake system. Specs - 63" drivers, impressive 285 psi boiler pressure, 25x32" cylinders, engine weight of 447,000 lb, tractive effort of 76,905 lb. J. R. Quinn photo

Title:  CP 2-10-4 #5931
Description:  Excellent action shot of Canadian Pacific 2-10-4 #5931 handling a long freight somewhere outside of Walsh, Alberta, Canada. Built by Montreal Locomotive Works in 1949, this loco (serial #76222, class T-1c). this loco and its 5 other sisters were the last regular gauge steam locomotives to be buiilt for a Canadian railway. The class was scrapped in 1959 but #5931 and 5935 were saved, the only two 2-10-4's to be preserved. This loco is now on public display at Heritage Park in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. J. R. Quinn photo

CP 2-10-4 #5934 (actually #5931 renumbered)
Title:  CP 2-10-4 #5934 (actually #5931 renumbered)
Description:  Here is the face of a mighty force that helped tame the rugged Canadian Rockies shortly after retirement. Built by the Montreal Locomotive Works in 1949 as CP #5931, it was part of the 3rd and last order for 2-10-4 Selkirk type steam locomotive (CP's name for the Texas configuration). For some odd reason, this loco was retired, donated to the city of Calgary for display and was purposely renumbered at the time to #5934 as it appears here. Later, it was renumbered correctly to 5931 and placed at the entrance to Heritage Park in Calgary. J.R. Quinn photo

CP 2-10-4 #5933 - Canadian Pacific
Title:  CP 2-10-4 #5933 - Canadian Pacific
Description:  Long before an SD40 unit wore the number 5933, this Montreal Locomotive Works 2-10-4 Selkirk steam locomotive had that honor. Built in March of 1949, the loco was one of the last standard gauge steam locomotives built in Canada for a Canadian railway. So well matched to the task they were designed for, they held off early diesels for years. Unfortunately this semi-streamlined beauty met the scrapper's torch in September of 1959 after barely serving 10 years. Specs - serial #76224, class T1c, 63" drivers, 285 psi boiler pressure, 25x32" cylinders, engine weight of 449,000 lb, tractive effort of 78,000 lb. Unknown photographer

CP 2-10-4 #5934 0 Canadian Pacific
Title:  CP 2-10-4 #5934 0 Canadian Pacific
Description:  Beautiful, semi-streamlined and powerful are the adjectives for the Montreal Locomotive Works 2-10-4 Selkirk steam locomotive (known in US as Texas type loco). Montreal Locomotive Works built 36 Selkirks between 1929 and 1949. Perhaps the most uniquely Canadian steam locomotive, they featured many design features and modifications that allowed them to excel in their environment. After nearly 10 years of faithful service, this sweet loco met with the scrapper's torch in August of 1959. Specs - serial # 76225, T1c class, 63" drivers, 285 psi boiler pressure, 25x32" cylinders, engine weight of 449,000 lb, tractive effort of 78,000 lb. Arthur B. Johnson photo

CP 2-10-4 #5934
Title:  CP 2-10-4 #5934
Description:  This loco is oddly in near mint condition for having been photographed in 1953. Most of the 1949 MLW built 2-10-4's were showing distinct signs of age. This is not one of the two 2-10-4's that was preserved, although CP 5931 was oddly renumbered as 5934 at first when it went on static display in Calgary after retirement. Does anyone know why this loco looks so sharp at this late date? Did it serve is some commemorative service? The photo was hand dated by J.R. Quinn so I don't think it was a number error.
