Here is the second of four successive duplicate 35mm color slides of photos by John Dziobko, Jr., that were taken at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Engine House at Meadows Yard near Kearny, New Jersey, on 23 January 1958. Prominent here is PRR engine #5379, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during June of 1924 and retired in April of 1958. Partially visible at the left is PRR engine #4733, a P-5A (2-C-2) "Box Cab" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in January of 1933, rated at 3,750 horsepower, and retired in March of 1964. Here is page two of a four-page article by William Moedinger Jr., entitled "From Baltimore To Harrisburg On The PRR." It was published originally in the August 1944 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 39. Photo Caption: "The tandem K-4's are pulling the 'St. Louisian.' Because of the curves and grades, average speed over this line is slower than over the Pittsburgh Division, which hurdles the Alleghenies." PRR 4-6-2 #5388 - Pennsylvania RR
Description:
Here a crew member stands on the running board to give the 1927 PRR Juniata Shops built K-4s Paciifc a check and a wipe. Specifics - serial #3913, K-4s, 80" drivers, 205 psi boiler pressure, 27x28" cylinders, engine weight of 304,500 lb, tractive effort of 44,460 lb. The loco was retired and scrapped in August of 1956. The location and date were not given so approximates were used. Unknown photographer.
