Description: |
Originally built by both Baldwin and Alco for the Russia in 1917-18, a large number were suddenly available with the collapse of the Russion Government. The Erie purchased this decapod and eventually sold it to the New York, Susquehanna & Western in December of 1944. Specifics - J-2 class, 52" drivers, 180 psi boiler pressure, 25x28" (2) cylinders, engine weight of 197,900 lb, tractive effort of 32,467 lb. Eventually the unit was scrapped and no NYSW decapod survived. |

They're pushing a 9,000-ton iron-ore train as it approaches the 1.3% upgrade near Shamokin. Also note that the helpers are ahead of PRR N-5 cabin car #477006! This photo comes from a color slide set entitled "Steam on the Pennsy's Elmira and Shamokin Branches" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (785-35). |

Here is a photo by an unidentified photographer via Rail Photo Service that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1940. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #3705, an I-1S (2-10-0) "Decapod" built in Juniata during March of 1919, rebuilt as an I-1SA in March of 1949, and retired in March of 1952 after 33 years of faithful service. In this context, it's pushing a mixed-cargo freight train around the Curve and up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where it will uncouple and return to East Altoona for yet another helper/pusher run up "The Mountain." Mann. Here is a photo by an unidentified photographer that was taken near Duquesne, Pennsylvania, on 30 April 1939. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #3710 and #6769. Both locomotives are products of the PRR's Juniata Shops. #3710 is an I-1S (2-10-0) "Decapod" built in May of 1919 and retired in August of 1956, while #6769 is an M-1A (4-8-2) "Mountain" built in September of 1930 and retired in August of 1955. This photo was taken quite soon after the accident, witness the steam from rain falling on the still-hot firebox!
