CRI&P H-15-44 401
Description:
CRI&P H-15-44 401 at the Rocket House, around 47th Street in Chicago, Illinois on October 31, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in December 1948 (c/n 15L13), and along with number 400, were the only two Fairbanks - Morse locomotives on Rock Island's roster. They were specially equipped for suburban service, having both a steam generator and provisions for head-end coach lighting power (note power cables dangling from a connection next to the headlight). In May 1958, both H-15-44's were re-engined with EMD 16-567C prime movers, creating 1500 horsepower units that were essentially GP7's in F-M carbodies. Although the 567C (used in the GP9, SD9, and F9 EMD models) was rated at 1750 hp, it was likely de-rated to accommodate the reuse of the original Westinghouse Model 370-F traction motors (I'm still researching the traction motors). The letter F painted on the frame indicates that this is the Front of the locomotive. One source states the two F-M's were traded to GE during September 1966.
