CNW 4-6-2 #1538 - Chicago & North Western |
Description: |
Beautiful action shot by an unknown photographer of Chicago & Noth Western 4-6-2 Pacific #1538 pulling into the passenger staton in Arlington Heights, IL. Built by Alco-Schenectady in 1910, this group of Pacifics (#1530-1540) were the only Es delivered with 23" diameter cylinders - both the North Western and Alco came to the same conclusion and adopted 25" cylinders beginnning with 1541. Later, CNW shops superheated the class. The date is approximate based on the parked autos near the station. |

Description: |
Although a GP7 would carry the number later, this Alco Pacific had it first. Gleaming in the afternoon sun, it demonstrates the high maintenance these mostly passenger locos were afforded. Tall 75" drivers gives it a scared rabbit look and some speed pulling the coaches. This is a Robert M. Hanft photo. |

IC 4-6-2 #2039 - Illinois Central |
Description: |
Originally built as Illinois Central 4-6-2 Pacific #1085 by ALCo-Brooks in January of 1912, it was rebuilt and renumbered in January of 1943 as IC #2039. The loco lasted until being scrapped in July of 1955 however this photo was dated 9/25/1955 and showing it in working condition. The discrepancy could be the date marking on the photo or the ALCo records compiled by Weber. I lean toward the photo being mismarked. Rebuilt specs - 61" drivers, 215 psi boiler pressure, 25x26" cylinders, engine weight of 248,733 lb, tractive effort of 48,683 lb. No photographer listed. |
