Prominent here are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #410 and #5417. #410 is an L-1S (2-8-2) "Mikado" built in Juniata during April of 1915 and retired in August of 1955. #5417 is a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in February of 1927 and retired in August of 1955. AW. Here is an image of a photo by Arlington J. Wolfe that was taken from the 24th Street Bridge in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 19 August 1933. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #6956 and #5418. Both were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. #6956 is an M-1 (4-8-2) "Mountain" constructed during December of 1926 and retired in November of 1949, while #5418 was built in February of 1927 and retired in February of 1956. In this context, they're passing SLOPE Tower with a passenger train that's on its way up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Johnstown and points West. Here is page five of an 11-page cover article by Frederick Westing entitled "The Locomotive That Made Penn Station Possible." It was published originally in the October 1956 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 32. Painting Caption: "The common meeting ground of K-4 Pacifics and DD-1 electrics was Manhattan Transfer, an engine-change point just east of Newark whose high-level platforms could be reached only by rail. Trains commissioned Artist George Gloff to re-create that era." Depicted here are PRR engines #5426 and #24. #5426 is a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during February of 1927 and retired in August of 1956. #24 actually consists of #3980 and #3981. Both are DD-1's (2-B+B-2) built in Juniata during July of 1910 and rated at 3,160 horsepower; both were later transferred to the Long Island Rail Road and renumbered: #3980 became "360-A" and #3981 became "356-B."

Wood. Here is an image of a photo by Don Wood that was taken near Bay Head Junction, New Jersey, c. 1956. Wood's Caption: "Bay Head Jct. afforded many opportunities for shooting the unusual. Case in point: K-4's 5439 and 3750 flank passenger 'Shark' 5783." #5439 is a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during March of 1927 and retired in April of 1958. #3750 is a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" constructed in Juniata as number "3750" in March of 1920, renumbered "1737" in 1956, and presently on display as number "3750" at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg. And #5783 is a BP-20 built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in November of 1948, rated at 2,000 horsepower, and retired in November of 1964. William E. Burket Collection.
