A three hour late Lake Shore Limited rolls into the Albany Renssalaer station behind an SDP40F/E 9B combination. I lived in NY City, which was electrified territory, and mostly saw FL 9s and electric motors, with an occasional E unit if I got to Harmon. The SDP40F was a treat, and this was the first one I had seen. The power was pulled here, probably so it could be serviced and sent back west. I dont recall what the train got-I think Es, though it could have been FL 9s, which sometimes ran to Albany. |

The "Floridian" was Amtrak's last attempt at a direct Chicago to Florida5train; it was anulled only ten months later. Looking back now I wonder why I didn't shoot a picture of the whole train and the station; ah, but that's irrelevent now. As for this unit, the five-year old 545 has only a few months to go before it went back to EMD as trade bait for a new F40PH. |

Cruising along at 70 MPH, SDP40F's 551 and 557 were powering the westbound SUNSET LIMITED passed the "temporary" train order office at Raceland Junction, as the operator gave the train a roll-by inspection. Steam generator car 1918 was tucked in behind the locomotives, which was very unusual. This "temporary" office was placed here soon after a freight train derailment wrecked the previous depot on 10 June 1967 and it remained here for almost 18 years, until the introduction of Direct Traffic Control (DTC) on 18 February 1985 eliminated the need for any train order offices along the SUNSET ROUTE between New Orleans and El Paso. |
