Here is a unique 1934 Baltimore & Ohio shops creation - B&O 4-4-4 #1, dubbed "Lady Baltimore" and the only one built with this wheel configuration by B&O. According to www.steamlocomotive.com "This unusual locomotive was designed to be a lightweight engine along the lines of successful British light passenger types. The cylinder dimensions are modest, the water-tube boiler pressure relatively high at 350 psi. The tall drivers were worthy of note. The exposed Walschaerts valve gear is all-American. Although it was operated both on the B&O and on the Alton, it was not a great success. The factor of adhesion alone suggests how slippery this engine could be." Specs - 84" drivers, 350 psi boiler pressure, 17.5x28" cylinders, engine weight of 217,800 lb and a modest tractive effort of 30,370 lb. Unknown photographer. |
