On the Brookhaven National Labs spur
Title:  On the Brookhaven National Labs spur
Description:  The Long Island had a short spur into the Brookhaven National Labs off the Main Line at Yaphank. They didnt do much there, but during WW I, this was Camp Upton, and embarkation point for troops going to Europe-and subject of the song "Yip Yip Yaphank". The parlor car fantrip that ran to Greenport in May 1981 covered the line.

Budd and Branch
Title:  Budd and Branch
Description:  In January 1984, Metro North ran a trip called "Budd and Branch" which was to cover all the ex New Haven branches served by MN. Danbury and Waterbury were not a big deal, they were done by RDCs and FL 9s every day. Here we see the trip at New Canaan, which almost never saw diesel powered trains. BTW, the RDCs apparently were balky that day, and the trip ran with a pair of coaches sandwiched between a pair of FL 9s.

Not exactly an RDC
Title:  Not exactly an RDC
Description:  The idea behind the title of MNs "Budd and Branch" trip was that it would run with a pair of RDCs on the ex New Haven branches served by MN. As I recall(30 years later) there was a mechanical issue with the Budd cars, and a pull-pull train powered by FL 9s was run. The cars were an ex Amtrak coach and this SEPTA ex Reading car.

Whose trip this is
Title:  Whose trip this is
Description:  The Tri State RHS ran a Farewell to the CNJ trip on the eve of the line being abandoned west of High Bridge, on Nov 24 1985, The trip covered the line all the way to Easton PA, just across the river from its final regular service stop in Phillipsburg NJ. The Easton stop was made to alleviate the disembarking problems at Phillipsburg, which had actually not seen a passenger train since the end of 1983. So we got a bonus!! The cars were designated by letter, but all carried the CNJ herald, as seen here on car H.

Description:  One of the common debates in that time was the serous fan vx daisy picker issue. A lot of fans felt the trips should be more for the fans than the casual riders. Either way, these trips sold A LOT of tickets, often selling out. The crowd here bears witness, as this photo at the site of the old Lehigh Valley station in Easton attests.

Good looking train
Title:  Good looking train
Description:  The train was posed on the ex LV bridge for photos. The handrails on the ex CNJ bridge are just barely visible to the left of the lead unit, seen through the trees. The LV bridge was ultimately determined to be deficient, while the CNJ bridge was in much better shape, and it was decided that the Lehigh Line would be swung over to the CNJ alignment and over that bridge, and the right of way realigned on the Jersey side. This is the route NS uses today.
