KCS American Crane near Beaird Industries in
Title:  KCS American Crane near Beaird Industries in
Description:  This crane was tied up for the night after a "long" trip from Frierson, La. to Shreveport. The crew had so many stops at such a slow speed they only made this much progress before hours of service got to them.

Fire From Rail Grinding Trains Starts
Title:  Fire From Rail Grinding Trains Starts
Description:  Brush fire caused when a spark from a rail grinding train hit some trash that hoboes had left. This was the only fire that was not immediately snuffed out by the fire suppression systems on the train. No one anticipated, however, that dry trash would be hidden in the tall brush at the base of the signal bridge.

Firefighting Caboose in Action
Title:  Firefighting Caboose in Action
Description:  LORAM firefighting caboose extinguishes a fire caused by sparks from the rail grinding train. While LORAM's equipment has numerous fire suppression devices, sometimes a fire starts anyway. In this case, trash left by local hobo types ignited.

KCS Freight Obscured by Grinding Train Smoke
Title:  KCS Freight Obscured by Grinding Train Smoke
Description:  A KCS freight lumbering up Wilson Alley is somewhat obscured by the smoke from the rail grinding train. You can see just how bright the sparks are underneath the grinding cars. I wonder if the TV news van on the Murphy St. overpass thought there was a fire in Wilson Alley?

All The Action One Could Ask For
Title:  All The Action One Could Ask For
Description:  I guess you could ask for another train to be on the third track but this shot of a passing NS stack train heading into downtown Shreveport along with the ditcher crew action was enough action for me. A couple of notes: (1) Look how straight the ditch is. (2) The pickup to the left of the NS train was another picture taking railfan. (3) The gray transmission shop is one of three triangular shaped buildings near tracks in Shreveport. (4) I've never seen a rail crew use the sidewalks on the bridge, but plenty of transient types do.

Brandt 5500 Power Unit
Title:  Brandt 5500 Power Unit
Description:  The Brandt 5500 power unit (this one used by the KCS) has got to be the wave of the future for maintenance of way work. Instead of a fuel-guzzling locomotive that is confined to tracks, this unit will pull the typical MOW string of cars and can operate on either the rails or the highway.

Brandt 5500 Power Unit In Action
Title:  Brandt 5500 Power Unit In Action
Description:  This is one incredible hi-rail. In fact, its more akin to a locomotive. In Mansfield, this Brandt Power Unit was hooked up to six gondolas full of ties and spikes. After I took this photo, it backed out of the siding and headed out on the KCS with its load of freight cars. The Brandt 5500 has a 550 h.p. caterpillar engine, can operate on the tracks at speeds up to 40 mph, and has a tractive effort of 45,000 pounds. It has full size couplers and train compatible air brake systems.
