Missouri Pacific
Title:  Missouri Pacific
Description:  Located deep in the heart of Louisiana's Acadiana region, New Iberia was on the main line of the Espee's SUNSET ROUTE; but up until 1982 it was also served by a branch of the MoP. That's Bayou Teche in the foreground.

Sunset Route
Title:  Sunset Route
Description:  In New Iberia the main line of the SUNSET ROUTE runs down the middle of Washington Street for about four blocks, from Center Street to French Street. Up until early 1978 there were two tracks embedded in the pavement, just like streetcar tracks; even though the former westbound main line had not been used since about 1954. When this photo was taken, looking east, the unused track was being removed and westbound train Second 241 -- with L&N U23B 2704 -- was about to enter Washington Street at Center Street. A few years later, the track was placed in a ballasted trough in the middle of the street. The switch in the foregound was the east leg of the wye connection with the Midland Branch. Up until 1970 a Missouri Pacific track ran down the middle of Pershing Street, one block to the right.

MP 13461
Title:  MP 13461
Description:  MP caboose 13461 crosses the main line of the SP at West Tower on an 11-car train from the salt mine at Jefferson Island to New Iberia. The caboose was built at the MP shops in Sedalia, MO in 1950 as the 1196, one of 180 welded cabs built by the railroad in 1949-50. The salt mine closed after it was flooded by an oil rig in November 1980.

Saturday
Title:  Saturday
Description:  It's noon on a Saturday at New Iberia, and things are pretty quiet on the SP. In the foreground are fuel car 62295 and caboose 444. On the other side of the caboose -- on the engine tie-up track -- are SW1200R's 2309, 2313 and 2307. One of these units would have been the New Iberia Switcher, one would have been for train 519/520 -- the run to the salt mine at Avery Island -- and the third was probably a extra engine that was being swapped out for maintenance. Visible between the tank car and the 2309 are the scale house and the east end of the freight house, while the depot is in the left background.

Missouri Pacific
Title:  Missouri Pacific
Description:  This tiny office and portable building provided the accomodations at the Missouri Pacific yard in New Iberia. The MP received permission from the ICC to abandon this branch on 21 July 1982, the last MP train left New Iberia for the mainline connection at Port Barre on the afternoon of 27 August, and all MP operations here ceased at 5 P.M. on 28 August. This yard and a few miles of track were acquired by the Espee, and now belong to the Louisiana & Delta. Thats a sugar mill across the street.

The box car is on a track that once ran down Railroad Street about four blocks to Bayou Teche. The tracks in the foreground had been the caboose track and engine tie-up track for the locals and switch engines that were based here, but those jobs had been abolished or moved to Lafayette.
