Album Info:Ethan invited me out for a little bit of fanning on the Rochester and Erie Railroad. CN was also running a OCS that day which was where we decided to begin our day. Things started out slow, but by the end of the day we couldn't have been more pleased with the day's results! Enjoy!

NS 4310
Title:  NS 4310
Description:  Ethan and I had been planning a trip to the Rochester and Erie for a few weeks, and the day had finally arrived. Our friend Nick has been working for the railroad now for a couple months, and it would be my first time seeing him work. With a run planned to Argos that day, we knew we our plans were set in stone. We hadnt planned on starting the day very early, but, CN was running a OCS out of Homewood and east into Canada that morning. So, we decided to begin our day with that. Leaving Markham at 0600 EST, we ended up having to start out day very early. So, thats what we did. We jumped onto US 31 and began to make our way north to South Bend, where we planned on catching the train at CP Flower south of town. When we made it into Argos, the train had yet to pass the Griffith Camera, and there were sparks of life coming from the Chicago District on the scanner. So, we decided to stop and head over to the yard. A green signal greeted us for westbound NS 29C at Juniper, and minutes later, the train passed us with three NS GEs at track speed.

NS 6949
Title:  NS 6949
Description:  After 29C passed, I walked to the other side of the crossing where I nabbed a quick shot of the solo SD60E in the yard that the NS L40 crew would use later in the day.

AMTK 179
Title:  AMTK 179
Description:  The OCS passed the Griffith Camera, but what surprised us is the train ended up continuing north onto the J up to Kirk Yard, where apparently they were going to tour before continuing east. So, we had even more time to kill. So, we went up to CSX Bremen. After an hour with nothing on CSX, we grew impatient and went up to the Chicago Line in South Bend. We decided to hang out at CP 435 where a pair of trilight signals still guard westbound movements on NS. Both Amtrak trains were in the picture when we arrived, and AMTK 40, the westbound Floridian, was our first train when we arrived.

NS 4516
Title:  NS 4516
Description:  Ethan wanted to grab some breakfast at the McDonalds down the street. Unfortunately, we missed CP 137 while Ethan was getting his food. But, a restricting signal on Track 1 and a clear signal on Track 2 let us know we still had plenty of westbound traffic coming. Our train with the clear signal came first, which was NS B10. A sole AC44C6M and 9,000 feet of train of almost all steel traffic surely woke up the entire town!

Title:  NS 4556
Description:  Moving down to Arnold Street, we grabbed NS 37M hustling through CP 437. I had never been to Arnold Street before, as Ive heard the neighborhood is pretty rough. While the time of day definitely helped, this isnt a shot I would exactly come running back to either.

Title:  CN 3309
Description:  Finally, the OCS was on its way, about four hours later than we had expected. We moved to CP Flower to wait. About 15 minutes later, the train crawled by us, giving us plenty of time to get multiple shots of the train.

CP 8919 and KCS 4841
Title:  CP 8919 and KCS 4841
Description:  Along with the OCS, we had been keeping an eye out on NS B16, which had the Southern Heritage Unit on the front. As we figured was going to happen, B16 showed up the same time as the OCS. Obviously, the OCS is what we came for, so we decided to drop our planned shot of B16 splitting the trilights. We made our way back to CP 435 after the OCS hoping it hadnt gone through yet. It had, so we decided to work east to Elkhart hoping we would see them yarding. They had been long yarded by the time we made it there. But, we decided to take a sashe through the yard to see what we could find. A pair of CP and KCS GEVOs were sitting right at CP 426, which we assumed was either inbound NS 30Q power or outbound NS 17V power.

Title:  KCS 4707

LTEX 1434
Title:  LTEX 1434
Description:  After 60N, it was time to get down to Rochester to finally see Nick at work. They were heading downtown today to pick up some storage cars, a move that isnt made very often. So, we definitely wanted to make sure we saw that. We met up with two other railfans there and they accompanied us as be began our chase. The crew was at lunch when we arrived into Rochester. But, as soon as they got back, they immediately fired the engine up and went toward downtown to grab their cars. The train passes an old concrete grain elevator at 8th Street.

Title:  NS 4676
Description:  My day of trains wasnt completely over though. When I hopped off of US 24 on the east side of Huntington, I found a loaded coal train stopped at Mardenis. With nothing lined up either direction, I quick hopped out to grab a few exposures of the train. I believe this was NS 798, but Im not positive. After this, it was homebound for me. Arriving home just a little after 11 PM, I had officially been awake for almost 20 hours. These long days sure do take a toll on me, but boy are they fun! A great day with some good friends.
