Somehow, someway, we mistakenly planned this trip around the Cheyenne Frontier Days. But in reality, this was no mistake in my perspective. Every year, UP runs a steam excursion with their Class FEF-3 "484 Northern" Locomotive No. 844. Currently, this is UPs only active steam locomotive in their program. Naturally, with a running steam locomotive right around the block from us, there was no way I was going to not get out and see it for myself. I wanted to see the train at speed, so we drove a couple miles south into Colorado and set up shop in the tiny community of Carr. The train was slated to leave Denver around 9:00 AM MDT but of course it ended up being a little later than that. I was the only rail nut set up at that crossing for the longest time, but eventually some other people began showing, and then finally, once the train was into view, the whole brigade came and shot it with me. It was so great to finally see a steam locomotive moving at such a quick clip again! |

With the amount of people out chasing the train, there was no real "chasing" opportunity for us, but we were able to get back into Wyoming in time to catch them one final time at speed before they would slow down, wye the train at Speer Jct. and push the train into Cheyenne. |

We set up shop just east of the Speer Jct. Wye to wait for the train to reverse west and reverse back east. However, there was some freight traffic to be moved first. An eastbound grain train showed up not too soon after we got set up. Cheyenne is a busy hub for the UP and the freight doesnt take a day off for the steam excursions. |

ITs amazing what a couple hours can do weather wise on the prairie. After making a stop at Family Dollar and a quick bite to eat at Sonic, storms had moved into the area. Pretty severe thunderstorms too. The lightning in them was quite impressive. Despite being issued under a Severe Thunderstorm Warning, the main bulk of the rain, wind, and lightning stayed to the southeast of where we were so we were able to go back and take a couple parting shots before the train departed back for Denver. The weather didnt drive any of the crowd out so I had to dodge people anyway I could, but I did get some clear shots. May I add how it got significantly colder once the storms came in? |
