Album Info:
Caltrain operates one of the busiest commuter routes on the west coast. With up to a dozen trains an hour, there is lots of action. Added to the mix are trains from Amtrak, Altamont Corridor Express, and Union Pacific. This album includes photos from 2019 and 2020.

Three Trains at Diridon
Description:
Three trains prepare to depart west. The 908 and 910 will arrive in San Francisco later today, completing a 1 1/2 hour trip. CDTX 2102 will follow UP tracks to Sacramento, where the run will terminate. The shadow in the lower right is cast by another Capitol Corridor train, which will also run to Sacramento.

Caltrain at Santa Clara St.
Description:
A Caltrain "Baby Bullet" crosses Santa Clara street on an Art-Deco bridge adorned with an SP Lines logo. The Cahill Street Station, now known as San Jose Diridon, as well as most of the Caltrain right-of-way, was once owned by the SP, and it was common 70 years ago to see 4-6-2 Pacifics and FM Trainmasters hauling loads of commuters in heavyweight coaches. The station itself in out of frame to the left. Cab car 117 is leading the train.

Caltrain 928
Description:
Caltrain 928 pushes its baby bullet express train across Santa Clara street from Diridon Station in San Jose. The Shark Tank, home of the San Jose Sharks, is just out of frame to the right. Diridon Station itself in out of frame to the left, the metal fence is where the platform for Track 1 ends. Caltrain 928 was one of 6 MP36PH-3Cs built in 2003 for Bullet Train service. Unlike Caltrains fleet of 23 F40PH variants, the MP36s are not named after a community along the peninsula. Instead, they remain unnamed, with the exception of 925, named after Congresswoman Jackie Speier, who helped secure money that was used to purchase the MP36s and start Baby Bullet service.

UP Local at Diridon
Description:
Union Pacific engines lead a local freight west towards Santa Clara. From here, the UP owns the tracks up to a junction just past the Santa Clara station,where the UP main turns towards Oakland, and the Caltrain line turns towards San Francisco. Caltrain has trackage rights over UP from Santa Clara to Gilroy.

Train 742
Description:
We look down the length of Train 742 on track one at Diridon. The station was the hub of Southern Pacific Peninsula Commute Operation, and saw varied sets of commuter train equipment, from 4-6-2 Pacifics with heavyweights to leased Amtrak P30CH "Pooches" and now sleek Nippon Sharyo Bi-Levels. The station still dons the Southern Pacific shield on both the main concourse as well as the baggage area.

California Department of Transpotation (CDTX) cab cars 8310 and 8308 sit quietly, ready to depart back to Sacramento, on May 30, 2020, at 4:00 PM. Capitol Corridor trains operate "Push-pull" style, and these cab-cars will lead their respective trains the 120 miles to Sacramento. The 8310, The Mount Hamilton, will depart with Train 738 at 4:10 PM, and the 8308 will depart on train 742 at 5:10 PM.

Amtrak California's Capitol Corridor
Description:
California Depatment of Transportation (CDTX) F59PHI 2005 and SC-44 2107 wait patiently on tracks 1 and 2 respectively. The 2005 was built in 1994 and was repowered by EMD with a 710ECO engine in 2013. The 2107 was built by Seimens right here in the Bay Area, and they are helping Amtrak expand their Capitol Corridor service between San Jose and Sacramento, California.

Caltrain F40PH 919, "The County Of Santa Clara" waits on track 4, with CDTX 2005 in the foreground. The weathered F40PH was built in 1987 for Caltrans and was rebuilt in 2012 with a Caterpillar engine, giving it the designation of F40PH-2CAT. Description:
Missouri Pacific caboose 13522 rusts away at San Joses Kelley Park, along with Southern Pacific 0-6-0 1215 and Orchard Supply Hardwares 40 foot Boxcar. The caboose was built as part of a 1971 International Car Company order and was supposedly retired in 1991. I have absolutely no idea how a piece of Mopac equipment ended up in the Bay Area on display.

Description:
A Union Pacific local approaches Diridon on Track 1. This part of Caltrains route is actually owned by UP. Caltrain owns only the trackage between San Francisco and Santa Clara, about 10 miles from here. At Santa Clara, the Caltrain tracks split from the UP main. At Diridon, its common to spot Caltrain, Amtrak California, and UP trains all at the same time.

Caltrain F40PH-2CAT 913 "Belmont" pushes its train into Diridon. The unit was built in 1985, and is a nice contrast to Amtrak Californias new Siemens Chargers. Caltrains fleet of 23 F40s were originally owned by California Dept. of Transportation (Caltrans). When Amtrak California was created, new F59PHIs came in, handling trains from Oakland and San Jose to Sacramento, a service that would later become Capitol Corridor. CDTX spun off the Peninsula subdivision, which in turn became Caltrain. Caltrain purchased the F40s from Caltrans for their own services, and now both services are using or are planning to use new power. Caltrans is using a mix of the F59PHIs and a group of Siemens SC-44 Chargers, while Caltrain is planning to entirely electrify their line in the mid to late 2020s.

Description:
Caltrain 912 waits its turn to depart on a bright August afternoon. JPBX 912 was built in 1985, and is one of the 13 F40PHs that has ben repowered with a Caterpillar engine. The consist behind it is of mixed heritage. Usually, the F40s are paired with the older Nippon Sharyo "Gallery" cars, while Bombardier MP36PHs handle the bombardier coaches, but thats not always the case. The first two Bombardier cars are ex-Metrolink cars, built in 1997. Metrolink took on new equipment in the late 2000s-early 2010s, and sold some of their surplus equipment to Caltrain. The third car wears Caltrain's standard paint for Bombardier cars, grey body with red stripe on the top portion of the car.

Caltrain 912 gets ready for departure time as a catenary pole watches over the scene. As Caltrains F40s reach 35 years of age, Caltrain put a plan into action to electrfy Caltrain, and catenary poles have popped up on the Caltrain Peninsula Subdivison from San Francisco to Santa Clara, and on UPs tracks from Santa Clara to Tamien, the next station past Diridon. While diesels handle services for now, Caltrain plans to be completely under wire by 2022, with new electric passenger sets running at 79 mph over the Peninsula.

Description:
Caltrain 119 and its sisters behind it are in the minority in Caltrains roster. These Bombardier cars are usually used for Baby Bullet express service, but are sometimes used for the slower local services. Caltrian 119 was built in 2008, among the newest cars on the railroad. The ex-Metrolink car behind it was built in 1997, and came to Caltrain in the early 2010s.
